Chapter 14

Someone was shaking Dale awake. He tried to curl away from them and grumbled for them to get lost, but they persisted. It slowly dawned on him that he was not in bed. Whatever he was lying on, it was narrow, hard and cold. His mouth was parched and his lips felt like cracked pottery when he licked them with his dry tongue. His head throbbed.

“Hey, man. Hey.”

Dale reached back with one hand and gave the annoying asshole trying to shake him to consciousness a none-too-gentle shove.

“Hey!”

“Get the fuck away from me or I’ll tear your face off,” Dale muttered without moving.

Someone else laughed softly. “Better do what he says, Brent.”

Brent mumbled curses under his breath, but he shuffled away.

Dale rubbed his eyes, sweeping away the grit and hoping for clarity. He was hung-over. He had been hung-over a lot in his life, he knew the feeling well. He was hung-over and all the evidence suggested he was in jail. He knew jails pretty well, too. The cold, hard surface he had passed out on was exactly like cold, hard benches in holding cells all over the nation. The smell of vomit, mildew and piss was also pretty de rigueur.

He sat up and scrubbed at his face with his hands, trying to wake himself up. His stomach somersaulted and his mouth watered, but he picked his head up and swallowed, counted to ten and waited for the nausea to pass. It did after awhile.

A mousy little guy sidled over to him. “Hey.”

“What?” Dale snapped. He was in no mood for this.

The guy offered Dale his hand. “Whatchername?”

Dale frowned at him as he decoded that. “Dale,” he said. “What do you want?”

“Nothin’.”

“He wants to know if you got any blow stashed up your ass,” said another guy sitting farther back in the cell with his back to the wall. He was a dark skinned black man. When he smiled, his teeth gleamed like pearls. “He been making an annoying prick of hisself since they tossed him in here.”

“I’m Brent,” the mousy guy informed Dale.

“I don’t have anything,” Dale said.

“You got any smokes?” Brent asked hopefully.

Dale sat up and felt his pockets. He actually should have had smokes, but then he was in lockup. Cigarettes were contraband. “Guess not,” he said.

Cigarettes were not his most urgent concern though. His hat was gone.

“Shit.”

He got up and went to peer out the tiny window in the door. Outside, the hallway was white and tan speckled linoleum, taupe walls and fluorescent lights. Hospitals came in calming hues of green and blue, jails and prisons in drab shades of grey and tan, and it all boiled down to a sliding scale of “You are in big trouble, buddy” when it was the first thing one saw outside the door upon waking. Somewhere down the hallway a phone rang.

“Hey!” Dale shouted. He banged on the door.

No one came to see what he wanted or to tell him to shut the hell up. He hadn’t really expected they would.
