“Maya, my child! When did you come in daughter. No news of your coming!” My mother rushed in my room when she saw me. She sat beside me and lovingly patted my head. Then she withdrew her hand and said in an alarmed tone. “Are you ill my child? Your forehead is burning!” She looked quite concerned.

How could I tell you mother what I was suffering from! At that time I just wanted to be alone. A serene atmosphere! But I knew if I kept mum, my mother would be worried more. She would continue bombarding me with her questions and keep bribing God with this much or that much as and when I got cured of my ‘ailment’. But how could I tell her about my illness? The ‘cause’ had just driven away in the car!

“Ma, I’m all right. It’s just the weakness and the motion sickness. Don’t worry. I’m all right. It’s just that you are not with me. It makes me ill”, I tried to be as convincing as possible and tried to allay her fears.

“Aha, you are all right! Tomorrow I will offer sweets in the temple”, she rejoiced and hugged me. “But, Maya tell me one thing. You’ve grown so thin. I think you aren’t eating properly, no?” Ah, the motherly concern! When it’s there you feel annoyed. But when it’s not there you rue it. Strange, no!

“Ma, you are always worried about the food. There is life beyond it too.” I said in a false anger as she moved her fingers lovingly in my hair.

“O.K., O.K. But how did you come dear?”

“Oh Ma that! Minister’s son was coming this way. He came to know through Seema Didi that I was also going home today. He offered to drop me here. I said yes. So he dropped me. Ma…” I couldn’t complete as she interrupted in between.

“Really! He dropped you here. Then, why didn’t you ask him to come inside? You girls lack in basic manners. It’s not proper dear. Your father will be quite angry, when he comes to know of this”, Ma sounded irritated and chided me for my mistake.

“Actually Ma I asked him to come. But he said that he was getting late to the place he had to go. You know traffic and all, Ma. He said that next time when he’ll come, he’ll definitely come to our house”, I lied.

“Maya, you go and wash your face and get fresh. Meanwhile I’ll fix something for you to eat”, she said getting up.

“Ma, where’s aunt Vidya? Can’t see her anywhere”, I enquired looking around the house.

“Vidya has gone to the village temple. After so many days she has gone there. She’ll be back any moment. She’ll be very happy to see you here. Always talking about you.”

“Ma, I’m also very fond of her. In fact I’m dying to meet her. I’m…” Before I could complete, she went to the kitchen.

I had a soothing bath in my bathroom. Apart from your bed, and your favorite chair, it’s the refreshing bath in your bathroom, that’s cherished.
