A lone tear slipped out to slide down her cheek. Zac turned to face her and brushed the drop away with his finger.
“Don’t cry for me, Tina. I don’t deserve anybody’s tears.”
“Let me be the judge of that. Okay?” Clearly, he’d solved his problem of placing unearned blame on someone else and replaced it with a big dose of self-pity. Should she tell him so, or had he had enough soul-searching to deal with for one day?
That decision was God’s, not hers, Tina decided, more than happy to pass the accountability on to Him. So far, The Lord had done just fine arranging chances for her to minister to Zac. Unless that job was done—and she didn’t believe it was—there would be plenty of future opportunities to speak her mind and set him straight.
Besides, she loathed confrontation. That was one of the quirks of character that had made taking charge of her headstrong, teenage brother, Craig, so difficult. So ruinous.
Tina sighed. Boy, talk about wallowing in self-pity! She sniffled and managed a wan smile. “Frazier, you and I are a mess. If we got any more down in the dumps, we’d have to borrow a ladder to climb out.”
“You do have a way with words,” he said. Cupping her face in his hands, he used his thumbs to gently wipe the remaining tears from her cheeks.
Tina wasn’t sure whether it was the compassionate look in his eyes or the touch of his hands that made her tremble. Something serious was going on here. She and Zac had connected, spiritually as well as physically, and the result was so awe-inspiring, so perfect, it made her question its reality.
Blinking to clear her head and focus her whirling thoughts, Tina forced herself to take a deep, settling breath. If she was dreaming, this was the most true-to-life fantasy she’d ever concocted. Even when she’d told herself far-fetched stories all night long because she’d been too overwrought to sleep, she’d never managed to make her tales this believable. This wonderful. Then again, her dreams had never included a man like Zac Frazier.
She saw his gaze darken and narrow to concentrate on her lips. His head began to tilt slightly to one side, the way it would if he were planning to kiss her again. Her eyes widened. That was exactly what he intended to do!
Tina flattened her palms against his chest so she could push him away. Do it! her conscience ordered. Give him a shove and tell him to go home.
I will, Tina assured herself. Any second now. Yes, sir. I’ll call a halt to this whole ridiculous game we’re playing.
Only, she didn’t. There seemed to be a short-circuit in the communications between her will and her body. There she sat, practically stupefied, while a man she cared about prepared to make his second terrible mistake. The first had been their first kiss. The second would be more of the same. Unless she stopped it.
The weak protest she finally managed to make wouldn’t have been enough to deter anyone who didn’t respect her.
