Chapter 13

Theodora

I ALMOST FORGOT THAT Brad was sleeping over, so when there was a knock on my bedroom door, I nearly jumped out of my skin. Reaching for my chest, I tried to take a few deep breaths. My mind caught up with the situation, and I closed my eyes.

“Can I come in?” Brad asked from the living room.

“Hang on!” I yelled, jumping out of bed and turning around to tuck the covers in.

I didn’t want my boss to see the bed all messy for some reason. I was wearing pajamas, but they weren’t sexy or anything, so I didn’t mind if he saw the pants with kittens all over them or the giant, oversized T-shirt that read “Don’t talk to me before I’ve had my coffee.” The thing that I wanted to hide was the fact that I had just come from the bed, and that I had been dreaming about him.

The dream had started out G-rated. We were sitting in a coffee shop, talking about art. But it quickly devolved into a steamy encounter right there in front of a dozen other customers. I was mortified by the naughty dishes my subconscious was serving up and relieved that it had all been just a dream. I didn’t want to give Brad any ideas just in case his dreams had been equally wicked.

“Come in!” I said finally, standing back like an Army cadet ready to have my bunk inspected.

Brad poked his head in, not joining me at the bedside but remaining at a safe distance in the living room. “I’m going to head out,” he announced.

“Great,” I said quickly, then thought about how that might sound and tried to soften it a bit. “I mean, if you have to. I’ll just put something on.”

He focused in on my ridiculous shirt. “It’s fine. I’ve got my keys; I’m going to be late.”

“Just one minute,” I bargained. I really wanted to walk him to his car, to make sure that things were okay between us. I didn’t want his last impression of me to be some awkward crazy lady in her pajamas.

“Okay,” he said with a sigh, closing the door.

I raced to my dresser and pulled out a pair of jeans. Tossing the cat print pants off, I hiked into the jeans, found a T-shirt to go with them, and ran a brush through my hair. I wanted to brush my teeth and maybe put on some foundation, but I understood that he was anxious to go, and I didn’t want to keep him.

Emerging from the bedroom, I found Brad cleaning up the evidence of his sleepover. He had stripped the mattress of its sheets and balled them up on the chair. The sofa was reconstructed, all the pillows placed back in their original locations.

“Thanks for doing that,” I said.

He studied me for just a beat too long, and I wondered if I looked okay. Was there something about my appearance that I’d missed? I fiddled with the waistband of my jeans, hoping that my fly wasn’t open.
