The Party
On Saturday morning, Derek woke up after a difficult night’s sleep. He had chills, and he felt like he had a fever.
Keith saw his face when he came down to breakfast. “Derek, you are pale as a ghost! What is wrong?”
“I don’t know, but it seems to be some kind of a bug. You’d better stay away, or I will make you sick too. I really think that I should go back and lie down. Can you handle the chores today?”
“Sure. You go back to bed. Maybe you will feel better later. I will check on you in a while.”
Derek went back upstairs. He was all bundled up in bed, drifting in and out of a restless sleep. He kept dreaming of Kyle kissing him and how good it felt to have his lips on his.
When Keith came up to check on him, Derek was covered up to his neck, murmuring something that he could not understand. He did, however, hear one word: Kyle. Keith stood still for a minute, feeling hurt and wanting to see if Derek would say anything else. Total silence! Why is he calling Kyle’s name? When he gets over this sickness, we are going to have a long talk and figure this out.
Derek came downstairs and was feeling better. His fever had broken, and he was not chilled anymore. Keith was sitting at the kitchen table, and Derek noticed that he was deep in thought.
Keith looked up and saw Derek standing there. “How are you feeling?”
“I am still not feeling well but certainly not as bad as this morning.”
“I am going to call Chrystel to tell her that we cannot come to the party tonight.”
Derek noticed that Keith was a little off but couldn’t figure out why. “What is wrong with you? Are you getting sick too?”
“No. I am fine. We just need to call Chrystel,” Keith said abruptly.
“No. You go for us. I will stay here and try to get over whatever this is. Chrystel will be so upset if both of us don’t come. At least one can go.”
“Okay. I will go. You stay here and get well.”
When Keith left to go to Chrystel’s, Derek was asleep again. He was still troubled by hearing Derek call out for Kyle but decided to deal with it later. Derek was too sick to talk about anything this important.
Keith arrived at Chrystel’s house. The first person he ran into was Kyle. I don’t want to talk with him right now. He walked over to a face he remembered and said, “Hi, Galen.”
“Hi, Keith. I am so glad you came. Where is Derek? I was looking forward to meeting him.”
Kyle was close by and heard Derek’s name. He noticed that he was not with Keith.
“He is sick at home,” Keith said. “I didn’t want to leave him alone, but he told me to come and have some fun. I am going to get a beer.”
“I will get you a beer,” Galen offered. “How about sitting with me and talking? I would like to get to know you better.
