Chapter 14 Ashley
âWhat do you think about this one?â
Maria was trying on a new tennis dress in the mall. They had both Adidas and Nike stores that we couldn't help but stop at. I had some money saved up since the sponsor was now paying for my groceries, and I was in desperate need of some new tennis clothes. Mine were all old, with holes, and did not give off the âyou can't touch meâ vibe I wanted when competing.
âI like it! I might get one too, but in blue.â I told her as I laced up a pair of new tennis shoes onto my feet. Maria went back into the changing room and pulled the curtain aside. I did a few strides up the hallway to test how they felt.
âSo, I have been wanting to ask you. Was that guy your boyfriend?â She asked me.
I stop in my tracks, and I feel my cheeks burn, âWho? Luca?â
She slides back out from the curtain in the clothes she came in. âIf that is the super-hot one with the amazing blue eyes, then yes.â
I sat back down on the bench and untied the shoes, slipping them back into the box. She sat down next to me, unhappy with my silence. âCome on, spill!â
I started to fold the t-shirts in my basket just to have something to do while I tried to explain.
âWe are not together, no matter how much I wish we were. I am not sure he likes me that way. Anyway,â I said, shaking my head, âheâs my trainer, and I really don't want to mess up what I have with him for some silly crush.â
âThere are like a million trainers out there! So, I say just go for it!â she told me.
âNo, you don't understand. He is a good friend to me. I want to keep him in my life, even if that means I don't get all the perks of being his girlfriend. I just like it when he is around. I don't want to mess it up. Plus, he also happens to be the best trainer I have ever seen, he knows exactly how hard to push me, how to build me up, and how to motivate me.â
âThat sounds to me like you guys just work well together. Your personalities mesh. I mean, all trainers are the same, and everything you just described is about his personality. He is easily replaceable in the trainer department, but you like how he acts with you. You would get on just fine if your trainer barely talked to you and just told you what to get done. You like Luca, and I think you guys fit well together.â
I sat in silence for a moment, letting out a big breath. âI kissed him, like last weekend, and he completely pushed me away. He acted like I just wasn't thinking and should not be pining after him. It absolutely crushed me. I thought, up until that point, that we might have had some type of connection, but he shut me out.
