Chapter 22
âThanks for agreeing to talk.â Mick enjoyed the feel of Carlyâs hand in his. He rubbed his thumb over the top of her hand, which fit well in his own. Looking across to the other side of the street, the lakeside park was calling. It was an excellent dayâexcept he had no idea if the day was going to end well...or otherwise.
âI didnât think I had much of a choice.â
While sarcasm was apparent in her voice, Mick felt there was also a hint of tenderness. âWas it too much?â
âHuh?â
âThe mob thing?â
âItâs called a flash mob.â Carly smiled. âJennaâs idea?â
âWas it that obvious?â Mick grinned. Jenna had come up with the idea and while he was unsure that it would get Carlyâs attentionâand forgivenessâhe was willing to give anything a try. After all, he had nothing more to lose. It also helped that Jenna was closer in age to Carly, not a lot, but still closer. And so he banked on the fact that maybe Jenna knew what would get Carly to give him another chance.
âLetâs see,ââCarly held out her hand and worked through her fingers, countingâflash mob serenade, Ed Sheeran, dancing ballerinas. Yup! It definitely has Jennaâs name written all over it.â
Mick laughed. His sister owned the Willow Oaks Repertory company and ran all the townâs plays and musical productions. It would have been clear that it was her idea. Mick led Carly across the road and over to the lakeside park. âThen I have her to thank.â
âWhat did you want to talk about?â
Mick looked down at their feet as they walked along step with each other. Carlyâs white sneakers were dainty next to his own large shoes. Heâd thought a lot about what he wanted to tell her. But the words escaped him. âI messed up, Carly.â
Carly didnât push. She waited for him to continue.
âIâm sorry. I shouldnât have lied to you. I know that it must have felt like an absolute deception to find out that I was also him. That I amâwasâNYJedi007.â
Carly continued walking. âWhy did you do it?â
âThe truth?â
Carly looked at him with raised eyebrows. âOnly the truth from here on.â
âRightâalways the truth.â Mick slipped his hands into his jean pockets. âThe truth is, that day that we had arranged to meet, I was all set for it. I knew that the person that I was meetingâWillowCup717âthe person I had fallen in love with, was from Willow Oaks. I was prepared for that. What I wasnât prepared for was that it was you.â
Carly licked her lips, which shimmered from her lip gloss. âAnd I wasnât who you had hoped for.â
âNot like thatâno. Thatâs not it. I had no expectations as to who it was gonna be. I just hadnât counted on WillowCup, on you being much younger than me.â
Carly shrugged. âSo you didnât get who you wanted.â
âLike I said, it wasnât that I expected it to beâI donât know. I just didnât thinkââ
âYeah, so you didnât think that it would be me. I think weâve established that.
