Seth

Anxiety twisted like a tight knot in Seth’s stomach for the rest of the day. Every time the door opened, he was afraid the director was back to take him by force. Seth didn’t want to put Tad in the line of fire but Tad was amazingly confident he could keep Seth safe.

Seth believed it, too.

Deep down, he knew if he stayed close to Tad, he’d be okay until he could get on his feet and disappear.

Going to Tad’s jeep after work was a challenge, but Seth pushed through and did his best to stay close. It was clear Tad was also keeping an eye out for any ambush attempt. Seth didn’t relax until they were back at Tad’s apartment, behind the alarmed door.

His stomach grumbled loudly. “Now I wish I had eaten before we left the kitchen,” Seth said.

“I didn’t eat either. I completely forgot.” Tad dropped his jacket and bag and headed straight for the kitchen. “I’ll whip something up.”

Seth collapsed on the couch, sprawled out. “How do you keep up the pace every day, Tad? You’re a machine.”

“I’ve been doing this a few years now.” Pots clanged in the kitchen. The can opener whirred. “I guess I’m used to it. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, you know?”

“You dreamed of working your fingers to the bone for a food kitchen?” Seth didn’t think that sounded much like dream. Different strokes, he supposed.

Tad laughed. The sound vibrated in Seth’s belly like music. It was a really nice laugh – like it belonged to someone who didn’t have any worries, even though Seth knew better. Ernestina and Stitch talked a lot about all the financial challenges of the kitchen.

“I like helping people. The family I come from? Our mother taught us to give back what we can.”

Seth sat up. Tad’s family. That’s right. The director had talked like he knew Tad’s family. What did he say his last name was? He couldn’t recall it but there was a ring of familiarity to it.

Interested now, Seth padded into the kitchen to see a pot of soup on the stove and Tad threw some herbs in it.

“Here,” Tad said handing the bread, butter and knife to Seth. “You get the bread ready for grilled cheese.”

Taking them, Seth found a cleared section of the counter and started spreading the butter on the slices. “So what are you going to do with the store next to the kitchen?”

“Well, I collect clothing to help give away to some of the homeless who have no money, but some of the material donations we get are nice enough that they can be sold second-hand.” Tad took one of the slices of bread and flopped it into the hot skillet. He layered two slices of cheese on it, then put the second slice of bread on top. “So, I was thinking about putting you with one of the volunteers to get that side of the store set up and ready to open. I can pay you. It’d only be minimum wage but at least it’d be something.
