Once you get the hang of it, this is a prayerful breathing exercise you can use whenever you feel overwhelmed.
True Rest
One of the most essential parts of soul care is rest. God created the Sabbath to give us this reminder, yet we often forget how important rest is.[2] We need rest, and if we donât get it in ways that serve us, we turn to less healthy, less satisfying methods like alcohol for a false form of rest. Weâve already talked about how alcohol destroys our sleep, but real rest and soul care goes much deeper than sleep.
Weekends are no longer rest time for me. If youâre a mom, you know what I mean. Weekends mean sports practices, dance classes, birthday parties, and playdates. But Iâve figured out how to carve out some time for rest after my children head to school on Monday morning. I donât meet with clients then; I usually try to make sure I go for a long walk or take a Pilates class. I had to get intentional and plan out this time for rest to stave off feeling overwhelmed on Saturdays when Iâm driving all over town between Ellaâs drama practices and Carterâs basketball games.
My client Jessica in St. Louis is a single mom of four who works as a full-time nurse. Her only form of self-care after a long day of work and caring for the kids was drinking. Together, we got intentional about her self-care schedule. Every week, we would look ahead and ensure she had time for herself. This meant doing her weekly budgeting on Monday, taking a walk on her lunch break, and turning her phone off at eight oâclock in the evening so she could go to bed by nine. This might not look like the self-care we see promoted on social media, but these small changes gave Jessica more quality rest and peace of mind than a bottle of wine.
What works for Jessica and me may not work for you. Itâs all about finding the tools that work best for your life. I recommend curiosity and experimentation here. Donât be discouraged if it takes a few tries to identify the small tweaks that deeply impact your self-care.
