Ruby and I get ready for the dance in my room. Then we run across the street in our heels to Ash’s place, because of course I’ve forgotten my phone in her room. Of course! It wouldn’t have anything to do with wanting to see Trip, with wanting him to see me all glittery for a night at the most prestigious boys’ school in Sydney. We need to get to Foxwood by six-thirty and it isn’t quite dark yet. The street is slick from the afternoon rain, but it’s cleared enough that we won’t need jackets. Good thing. There’s never any place to leave them at the boys’ schools. The bus that takes us to the dance will go at six-forty-five and we don’t want to miss it.

‘Are you sure you left it in her room, Annie? Did you try calling it?’ Ruby pulls off her shoes in Ash’s front hall. ‘I think I’m getting a blister already.’

‘I can tape it,’ Ash says, ‘like I do before training.’

‘No, Ruby, I’ll get you a bandaid, and you grab my phone, okay, Ash? It’s next to your bed on your night-stand, I think.’ I walk to the master bathroom, beside Trip’s room. I can hear Trip’s music, something old, some kind of jazz. I press my ear to the door. It’s Ella Fitzgerald singing ‘My Funny Valentine’. Our song.

I want him to see me happy and beautiful, going out, not caring about him. When I close the bathroom door, I give it a slam, grab the box of bandaids and head back into the hall.

Trip is there, leaning against his doorframe. Crossed arms, ripped jeans, bare feet. Behind him, the room is gloomy except for the light cast by a small lamp. His eyes are shadowed underneath. Brown, blue. He looks like he hasn’t slept in days.

‘Annie.’ He says my name like a sigh. ‘We should talk.’

A river slides between us, a river of distance and regret.

I shrug my blonde hair over my shoulder. No good conversation has ever started with We should talk. ‘Should we? When were you planning on getting around to that, Trip?’

‘I – I don’t know.’ He stares at me and I see the pain flicker across his face.

‘Let’s forget about it, okay? You’ve obviously got a lot going on in your life right now, what with your Canadian girlfriend and everything. And I’m not into it. Being second, being lied to. I don’t need it. Or you.’

He reaches out and traces a finger along my arm and I try not to shiver. ‘You don’t understand. It was nothing. Monique was, well, she was before you. And now I can’t think about anyone but you. I try to. She wants to get back together, long distance, whatever, but the entire time I was with her I kept thinking about you. You’re the whole package, Annie. Beautiful. Smart. Everything. I’ve tried to get over you this past week, but I don’t think I can do it.’

‘You have a funny way of showing it.
