Ruby and I get ready for the dance in my room. Then we run across the street in our heels to Ashâs place, because of course Iâve forgotten my phone in her room. Of course! It wouldnât have anything to do with wanting to see Trip, with wanting him to see me all glittery for a night at the most prestigious boysâ school in Sydney. We need to get to Foxwood by six-thirty and it isnât quite dark yet. The street is slick from the afternoon rain, but itâs cleared enough that we wonât need jackets. Good thing. Thereâs never any place to leave them at the boysâ schools. The bus that takes us to the dance will go at six-forty-five and we donât want to miss it.
âAre you sure you left it in her room, Annie? Did you try calling it?â Ruby pulls off her shoes in Ashâs front hall. âI think Iâm getting a blister already.â
âI can tape it,â Ash says, âlike I do before training.â
âNo, Ruby, Iâll get you a bandaid, and you grab my phone, okay, Ash? Itâs next to your bed on your night-stand, I think.â I walk to the master bathroom, beside Tripâs room. I can hear Tripâs music, something old, some kind of jazz. I press my ear to the door. Itâs Ella Fitzgerald singing âMy Funny Valentineâ. Our song.
I want him to see me happy and beautiful, going out, not caring about him. When I close the bathroom door, I give it a slam, grab the box of bandaids and head back into the hall.
Trip is there, leaning against his doorframe. Crossed arms, ripped jeans, bare feet. Behind him, the room is gloomy except for the light cast by a small lamp. His eyes are shadowed underneath. Brown, blue. He looks like he hasnât slept in days.
âAnnie.â He says my name like a sigh. âWe should talk.â
A river slides between us, a river of distance and regret.
I shrug my blonde hair over my shoulder. No good conversation has ever started with We should talk. âShould we? When were you planning on getting around to that, Trip?â
âI â I donât know.â He stares at me and I see the pain flicker across his face.
âLetâs forget about it, okay? Youâve obviously got a lot going on in your life right now, what with your Canadian girlfriend and everything. And Iâm not into it. Being second, being lied to. I donât need it. Or you.â
He reaches out and traces a finger along my arm and I try not to shiver. âYou donât understand. It was nothing. Monique was, well, she was before you. And now I canât think about anyone but you. I try to. She wants to get back together, long distance, whatever, but the entire time I was with her I kept thinking about you. Youâre the whole package, Annie. Beautiful. Smart. Everything. Iâve tried to get over you this past week, but I donât think I can do it.â
âYou have a funny way of showing it.
