CHAPTER FIVE
You can't sit with us
JJ
IâD DROPPED MAGGIE off and seen her inside after that kiss before I went to my next destination. This was something Iâd been meaning to do for days formally, but hadnât gotten around to it. As I pulled up into the familiar driveway with the perfectly manicured front yard and flower beds, the front light over the porch came on.
I exited the car and walked up the porch steps, glancing up at the haint blue porch roof. There was no chance to ring the doorbell as the front door swung open and two figures appeared in the doorway.
âI figured youâd be âround here at some point. Come on in for a spell before you get on to whatever else you got going on tonight.â
The voice that drifted out to greet me belonged to the slightly older version of the woman Iâd just left. Marlena Simmons was slightly rounder than her daughter, but there was no way she could deny her. If I wasnât used to the same dynamic amongst my mother and sisters, I would think it was strange.
âHello to you both, Mr. and Mrs. Simmons.â I gave them a nod as I wiped off my shoes as they stepped back from the doorway.
I entered Maggieâs childhood home and left my shoes by the door despite wiping them off. We hadnât gotten dirty at the lake, but I didnât want the chance of tracking anything into their house. This wasnât the way I thought Iâd be meeting them, but getting their approval meant a lot to me. The Simmons family had known me all their lives, but that didnât mean theyâd want me to be with their daughter.
They led me into their family room and the hall leading from the foyer was plastered with images of Maggie as she grew through the years. Her smile was always shy in the formal photos, but in the candid pictures around her family, her smile was as wide as her face. Her dark brown skin was shining as she grinned back in photos, and I smiled back at her.
Even in photos, she was magnetic.
Mr. Simmons cleared his throat behind me, getting me out of my stupor.
âI guess I donât have to ask why youâre here?â Now I was the one being bashful, as I smiled and shook my head no. He motioned me forward with his fingers and I followed him.
We sat down in the living room, and they were silent. Like they wanted me to let them know why I was here. It is late, JJ.
I cleared my throat, which suddenly felt dry, and looked at them both so they understood I was serious. âIâve made my intentions to Maggie clear. Weâve both been avoiding the inevitable for years and I would like to give us a chance at a relationship.â
âWhy now?â
Whew. Her mama was giving me a look that let me know I had very little room to sell myself and this idea of us. I couldnât blame her, really.
