Twenty-Three

“There,” I say to my reflection in the mirror above my bathroom sink; only the woman looking back doesn’t look much like me, and that’s the whole point. I don’t plan on stepping outside these walls looking like Stewart’s Jane or even Billy’s version. It hasn’t even been a full day, and I’m already planning on breaking his damn rules. Tonight, I’m in disguise.

Billy doesn’t know anything about Shana or that she needs out of Stewart’s claws. He would go ballistic if he knew I put myself anywhere near that life again, especially after his warning on my balcony to never go up against Stewart. Billy escaped with his career, probably barely intact because of the gossip created by my ex, and I barely escaped with my life. And now my new boyfriend is lying to me, and I need to find out more because I won’t be tricked again.

I need to do some investigating today. Things I can’t do from inside the apartment. Things that I need to risk going in public to find out, so I’ve overlined my lips to make them look fuller and applied false eyelashes. It’s incredible how makeup changes your appearance. I layered on my clothes to give my body a thicker appearance. I’m not the Jane that I’ve become accustomed to seeing in this mirror. I’m someone else entirely. Anyone looking at me from the outside wouldn’t know that I was once the skinny blond ex-wife of Stewart Miller.

I lock the apartment door behind me and head to the lot where I’ve parked Ramona’s car. I told her I needed to borrow it for the evening, and she didn’t hesitate to offer it up when I came stomping back in after talking to Billy. Girls stick together. She didn’t ask questions, and I like that about Ramona the most. She knows when just to let it be.

When I yank open the protesting driver’s side door, my nasal cavities are assaulted with the scent of Ramona─ a mixture of leather upholstery, cleaning products, and unfiltered cigarettes. The smell is horrible but oddly comforting. She didn’t hesitate to loan me her sweet baby as she calls her car. She’s more of a mother than my own was able to be.

I idolize her. Saving Shana and Delilah is a ‘Ramona thing to do,’ and I long to see her proud of such an accomplishment and feat of character.

I pull out of the lot and head for the library. It’s not too far off. As a matter of fact, my apartment is an excellent location for all the things I could need in life, so I never have to go far. Billy couldn’t have picked out a better place for me to live. I’m not from this area initially, Stewart brought me here, so I trusted Billy to help me find a home to call my own. Albeit, reluctant at first, much like Ramona, about my leaving the motel, he did end up delivering a location with stellar amenities and safety.
