Chapter 12.
Murphy watched Dan, and tried not to worry. Recovery from war and injury was a process, and love was a process. Nothing in life ever stayed still.
He wasn’t about to ask him if he’d made an appointment with the doctor, but saw it written on the wall calendar and knew the note was Dan’s way of telling him that he had. Dan seemed happier and more relaxed after he’d seen the doctor, and the number of different pills he was taking went down. Not that Murphy was counting.
They invited Austin and Cracker over for dinner, and the four men talked and laughed well into the night. Austin and Cracker were talking about getting married, wanting to make that kind of commitment to each other but still not sure what it would look like. Austin joked about carrying Cracker across the threshold, and the big man laughed down at him.
“You’d better start working out now, darlin’. And is Jack going to carry Darcy or vice versa?” Their two dogs, both rescued from dog-fighting rings, had become friends, against all odds. The men were just happy that the dogs weren’t fighting with each other, but it seemed like both had seen too much violence already. They were both content to have lots of food and comfortable beds to sleep on, and even slept curled up together on occasion.
Murphy’s first impression of Dan – well, his second one – was well-founded. The dumpster had arrived outside the clinic, and was filled then disappeared again. There wasn’t a whole lot of mess, and it didn’t look like a disaster zone. Stacks of material arrived, and the new store front took shape. The interior was ripped apart in stages and rebuilt, and there wasn’t much disruption to his business – just enough activity that clients noticed the changes that were happening and seemed pleased by them.
Murphy wasn’t too sure about the kid Dan hired, as he seemed to be just some teenager who’d been hanging around, but Kyle worked hard and apparently worshipped Dan. Sometimes a friend of Kyle’s showed up to help as well, and Dan started packing enough lunch for four or five men, and never had any leftovers. They both ate like starving wolves, but they were teenagers, after all.
The renovations were finished on time and under budget, and it looked clean and modern, but still fit in with the heritage buildings around it. Everything about the clinic was new, clean and well lit, and more efficient. His receptionist loved the new interior, and his clients seemed pleased as well and referred their friends. Everyone was happy.
A grand reopening celebration was definitely called for, and on that day the clinic was crowded with clients and friends, including many of the men from the farm. Murphy enjoyed the gathering, and enjoyed watched Dan’s face as compliments were showered on him for the work he’d done.
After they cleaned up and locked the doors, Murphy pulled Dan into the back.
“Come on, there’s something I have to show you.
