Chapter 14

“Honey, are you sure this is alright?” Nora asked as she nervously picked at the dress she wore.

“Of course it is! I couldn’t very well leave you at home, especially since you’ve only been out of the hospital for a few days.”

“Oh, that was nothing! The doctors even said so!”

“No, they didn’t, Mother. They said the exact opposite, actually,” Jade said, her voice full of exasperation as she repeated the same conversation she’d had with her mom at least ten times already.

Nora just didn’t understand how close she had come to dying, or being a complete vegetable when she woke up, if she did at all. It had been so close that whenever Jade thought about it she still broke out in cold sweats.

Which really was one of the reasons that she had insisted her mom, sisters, and Uncle Andy and his family join Carl and she for dinner at the almost complete house. At least complete enough for them to move into. There were still some issues that she had a feeling she would be working on for a long time yet, but as long as the floors wouldn’t collapse underneath them or the electricity went out or caused a fire, she would be happy.

“Come on, Carl will be here any minute. Let’s go see if dinner is just about ready.”

“I’m still not sure this is a good idea, Jade. I warned you about men like him.”

“I know you did. And you know why I have to do this, Mom. You know.” Nora looked at her for a long moment, her eyes big and sad, but then she finally turned away with a loud sigh.

“Just don’t get hurt, sweetheart.”

“I know, Mom. You’ve told me the same thing a hundred times already. I know what I’m doing,” Jade said, her nerves getting the better of her as she snapped, but instantly regretted it. “I’m sorry, Mom. But I mean it, I do know. I’ll be okay, I promise.”

“Well, you’d better, or there will be hell to pay, and nothing on heaven or earth could protect that boy from my wrath.”

“Okay, Mama,” Jade said, trying to hold back the laugh at Carl being referred to as “boy.” She jumped around in surprise as a loud knock sounded at the front door.

“Just, try and be nice to him okay? I’m trying to win him over.”

“You would win over the devil himself, Jade. Although I’m not convinced that’s not him standing there on the other side of that door.”

“Please, Mom,” Jade begged her, sending a pleading look at the woman’s retreating back.

“I’m not making any promises,” Nora called back at her, and Jade flinched as it caused a brief, but serious sounding coughing attack. They were happening more and more, but she could never get used to the painful, wheezing sound.

Another knock came again, this time impatient, and she hurried to open the door. He stood there, looking even more handsome than she remembered, and she barely noticed the dark grey storm clouds rolling behind him as she smiled at him.
