Chante stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror. Seven hours of sleep had restored her equilibrium. There was an undeniable sparkle in the emerald green eyes. She had a secret, one that she wouldn’t ever have the guts to share with anyone. No one should ever know what transpired in a bathroom of a patient in NY General Hospital. And who would even believe her?

She felt like she won the lottery. Heck, this wasn’t something she could add to her achievements in her resume. Still, the memory brought a smile to her face that she tried to hide from her brother, Markey.

“Why d’you look so happy?’ Markey eyed her suspiciously.

Do I...? she responded nonchalantly.

“Maybe because I have called in sick and will be with you the next three days?” she answered and was gratified with a loud “whoopee.”

She had decided on taking the spineless way out. She had no intentions of seeing Jared Lowell once again after what happened.

Whenever her conscience attacked her, she comforted herself with the thought, “We were two consenting adults, so it’s fine...”

She hoped that when she returned to work, mother and son would have been gone.

“... transfer to some fancy health facility or wherever billionaires go to recover,” Chante grumbled under her breath.

The idea made her feel despondent as her stomach plummeted.

“So what if I never see him again?” she asked herself.

But she did spend a lot of time on Google and was surprised at the stack of information there was about him.

“... Jared Lowell touted as one of America’s most eligible bachelors...”

“...Scion of Jared Lowell, Sr. and Chairman of Lowell Enterprises that span three continents...”

“... Receiving his diploma from Harvard Business School...”

There were photos of him as a young boy atop a Shetland pony with sweeping long shots of mountain ranges behind him, and a more recent one with his arm slung carelessly across the shoulder of a stunning brunette.

Chante searched for information about the girl, but found none. Instead, she felt a stab of pain pierce her heart.

“So... he has a girlfriend...what did you expect? A guy like him probably has a girlfriend behind every door he opens, including bathroom doors,” she grumbled under her breath.

She donned her scrubs hurriedly on the fourth day not wanting to be late again. She subdued the blooming optimism of seeing him again. Life would be so much simpler if both were gone by now.

The hospital entrance was swarming with paparazzi. Chante’s heart skipped a beat. Unless a movie star or another celebrity was confined, this could only mean one thing. Jared Lowell was still in the building.

The funk she carried the last three days suddenly disappeared.

“At least I’ll still get to see him... even from afar,” she consoled herself.

Chante was willing to accept scraps at the moment.

She made her way hurriedly to the station on the second floor. Nurse Betty was handing out time patient charts to the other nurses. They all looked eagerly at the charts. Chante saw how each face fell with disappointment.
