“Actually, Mr. St. James,” Mattias said, “my namesake is doing quite well after only a few hours in Dr. Taylor’s tender care. It’s unfortunate, though, that he’ll be transported from your sanctuary so soon.”

The director flushed at Mattias’ words, and Ginny couldn’t keep her mouth from dropping open. He was leaving? Already? Yes, his care prior to her arrival left much to be desired, but still. She was here now and could take care of him.

“Leaving?”

“Yes. It seems that there is a more...” His eyes met hers for a brief moment before returning to the director. “...amenable female that would benefit from his attentions. I stopped by to give you and Richard notice that he’ll be picked up this evening, but I found Dr. Taylor working in his stead.”

This time it was the director’s mouth that dropped open. It didn’t seem the man was used to surprises.

He seemed to recover quickly from the shock. “I see. Yes, well. It seems Dr.

Catsis had a car accident last week and has been unable to work.”

Mattias looked as if he’d been punched in the gut. Without thought, she wrapped her fingers with his, giving him her wordless support. The gesture didn’t go unnoticed by the director. He gave her a quick wink before returning his attention to Mattias.

“He’s fine, as it turns out. He’s unable to put much weight on his right leg, though, which is what has kept him from coming in. Well, I’ll leave you two to your tour.”

With a few handshakes, he left them alone. Ginny released the breath she’d been holding.

She waited until she was sure the director was gone before she began interrogating Mattias again. She tugged on his hand until he relented and sat on the bench with her. His body was so close, the heat from his thigh a mere inch from her knee felt as if it were burning her. If she moved just a bit forward she could…

“No wonder Richard left me to suffer with that woman.”

What? Richard? Woman? What was he talking about? He must have seen the confusion in her face, because he continued.

“You know, Richard, his accident, that wretched woman who called me a Love Defined

kitty? Any of this ring a bell? Do you do this often?”

“Do what?”

“Forget.”

“Oh. Yes, all the time. It’s not so much forgetting as it is my mind moving on to other things. Like you were talking about Richard, Dr. Catsis, and I was thinking about touching your leg with my knee.”

She slapped her hand over her mouth, and she knew without looking in a mirror that her face was crimson. Her cheeks heated as blood rushed to the area. Sometimes she was a great big idiot. Hell, most of the time. She closed her eyes, wishing she could just up and die from embarrassment.

Mattias’ warm fingers pulled at hers, removing them from her mouth.

“Ginny? You were thinking of doing this?” His leg pressed against her knee, the crinkly hairs tickling her smooth skin.

No matter what he did, she wasn’t going to open her eyes.
