11. Unfolding Events

Lucas sat at his desk in his office within the barracks, reviewing some reports and maps.

The financial administrator, Mr. Harding, walked in with a stack of papers in hand, ready to present the financial spending and budget report for the 4th Guard Army.

"Commander Marxius, I have the financial report you requested," Mr. Harding said, trying to maintain a composed demeanour.

Lucas nodded and gestured for Mr. Harding to proceed. As the administrator went through the details of the report, Lucas's brow furrowed in concern.

He noticed that a significant portion of the budget seemed to be allocated to areas that were not directly benefiting the soldiers or the maintenance of weapons and the barracks.

"Mr. Harding," Lucas interrupted, his voice firm but composed. "Can you explain why such a large portion of our budget is being spent on non-essential items?"

The financial administrator shifted uncomfortably in his seat, trying to find the right words. "Well, Commander, you see, there have been some... unforeseen expenses," he stammered.

Lucas leaned forward, his gaze unwavering. "Unforeseen expenses?" he repeated, pressing for a more detailed explanation.

Mr. Harding swallowed nervously before continuing, "Yes, you see, the former commander, Lord Harrington, he... he took a significant portion of the budget for his personal use and lavish enjoyments."

Lucas's eyes narrowed, disbelief and anger welling up within him. "He took nearly 90% of the budget for himself?" he asked, his voice raising with incredulity.

Mr. Harding nodded, his face pale. "Yes, Commander. It appears that Lord Harrington misused the funds for his own benefit, leaving very little for the well-being of the soldiers and the upkeep of the barracks."

A surge of anger washed over Lucas as he processed the information.

He couldn't fathom how someone in a position of authority could be so selfish and negligent, putting his own interests above the welfare of the soldiers and the city's defence.

"How was this allowed to happen?" Lucas demanded, his voice sharp and commanding.

The administrator looked visibly uncomfortable, shifting in his seat. "Lord Harrington was a noble with considerable influence, Commander," he explained. "He had the authority to manage the finances, and it seems he took advantage of that power for his own gain."

Lucas clenched his fists, struggling to contain his frustration. He knew that corruption and misuse of power were not uncommon, but to see it so blatantly affect the well-being of his soldiers and the city was infuriating.

"Mr. Harding, I want a full audit of the finances," Lucas declared, his voice unwavering. "I need to know the full extent of the misappropriation and what was spent on unnecessary expenses. This cannot be allowed to continue."

The financial administrator nodded, looking remorseful for his part in the matter. "Of course, Commander. I will conduct a thorough audit immediately," he promised.

Mr. Harding nodded again, understanding the gravity of the situation. "I will do as you ask, Commander," he said, rising from his seat to carry out the orders.

As the administrator left the office, Lucas leaned back in his chair, his mind filled with a mix of frustration and determination.
