Chapter Six

“TED!” I shout. Gordon glances over at me, but I wave him away like a literal bee. “YOUR FACE! YOUR BEAUTIFUL FACE! IT’S FINE!”

Ted chuckles in his adorable little Ted way. “Why were you worried about my face?”

“Because you wouldn’t FaceTime earlier,” I say. “Also the nature walk.”

ALSO WHATEVER IS GOING ON WITH YOU, TED.

He smiles. “You look really pretty, Riley.”

“So do you,” I say. “You know. Pretty like a boy.”

“That’s what I was going for,” he says.

I’m finally able to pull my eyes away from Ted’s face and his hair, and I realize he’s surrounded by the photographed noodles.

“Is that part of your nature walk?” I ask. “The nature of noodles?”

“I didn’t go on the nature walk,” he says. “I snuck away.”

“OH MY GOD!” I shout so loudly that Gordon starts paying attention to me again. “Ted! Did you turn into a juvenile delinquent? You’re supposed to be becoming a Young Leader of America! America needs you leading it!”

A vision of Ted Callahan as president soars through my brain and I fight the urge to salute him but then I give in. I still don’t know what he’s sorry for, but just seeing his face settles an anxious thing within me.

It should, shouldn’t it? I am not at all experienced in having drama. That’s Reid’s territory, and he’s not even good at it. He just goes through it all the time.

“What’s with the salute?” Ted asks like he doesn’t even recognize my randomness anymore. Ted, don’t sound like a stranger!

“Ted, I’m not a stranger!”

He just laughs, again, in his very normal Ted way even though what the heck is going on, Ted! There’s still this tiny piece of tenseness, and I can see it in his mouth, in a little quirked line down his forehead. This is what he looks like when he is concentrating, and maybe even stern. I do not at all like Stern Ted.

“Riley, I really tried to make it work,” he says, and then I notice that the background is not just noodles. A girl is there, too. Probably she’s thoughtful and never misses details and is also going to become a Leader of America. “You know that, right?”

“I DON’T KNOW WHAT I KNOW,” I say, because this isn’t a thing I want to worry about. What isn’t working? Us? Did something happen with that girl in the background? Ted is not that kind of young man, and even though I liked assuming Gordon found me attractive, I’m not that kind of young lady, either.

“I texted everyone for help,” he continues as if what he’s saying isn’t terrifying. “But no one can figure out a better route.”

“What?” I ask. Is that a euphemism? LIKE THE ROUTE INTO SOMEONE’S PANTS?

“My friend Christie has a car here,” he says. “Everyone knew how much I didn’t want to miss you playing at Trident, so we tried to make it in time.”

“YOU DID? You’re coming to the festival?”

“We tried to come to the festival,” he says. “And then this truck overturned and all of its contents spilled out onto the freeway.
