I haven’t talked to BK since our…interesting encounter last night. Imagine my surprise when I went into the bathroom before bed only to find my toilet paper hanging the wrong way.

He didn’t text me his coffee order this morning like he normally does. Clearly the trend isn’t that he does it’s that he doesn’t. Yet here I wait in line to order what I hope he is in the mood for today.

I have learned to ignore most of the coffee shop patrons, knowing they are mostly in their own little world anyways and not paying attention to me either. Yet when I hear the familiar low chuckle from my past, I can’t help but search for him.

A few people separate us in line, his fingers tangled with a beautiful blonde who is matching his chuckle with her little giggles. I snap my attention back forward, knowing they didn’t see me and secretly hoping he won’t.

I get to the counter, give BK’s order and slide to the side, turning my body away from everyone waiting in line. I flip through a magazine while I wait, anything to make myself look busy and not like I am panicking inside.

I flip to the horoscope page, not like I was looking for it but here we are. I find Aries and instantly want to throw the publication across the shop.

The position of the planets today means that you have a great chance to team up with someone who may well become a more permanent fixture in your life. While today may be a first date, or perhaps a chance meeting, you will realize how much you share in common. You will want to explore the relationship further and spend a lot more time in each other's company.

A first date? Fat chance of that.

Team up with someone who will become permanent? Unless BK is going to adopt me as his permanent coffee fetcher, that’s also not happening.

“Carter? I thought that was you! Hey, how are you?” Crap, wish not granted. It’s like this horoscope was trying to warn me that he for sure saw me and, of course, he would say hello. Breathe, Carter, fix your face before you turn around.

“Oh, hey, Warren. I am good, grabbing coffee for my…boyfriend.” Wow, Carter, that was so stupid. Seeing him with her, even more up close than when they were laughing in line, has made my whole brain short-circuit.

Lie. Lie. Lie.

The only other lie I have ever told Warren was that I had an orgasm. This lie seems monumentally worse. What if he spreads it around? Tells someone who tells another someone who leeks it to someone who writes things on the internet for other people to read.

“Boyfriend, huh? That’s awesome! I am so happy for you,” he starts before I interrupt him with more word vomit.

“It’s still really new. And not public knowledge so if you could keep it between us that would be great,” I say with more of a whisper, desperate to keep this conversation between us.
