Chapter 9

Nyesha and her friends entered the eating area with their plates of food before taking a seat at the table. Ms. Johnson stood at the front of the room waiting for everyone to sit down, and once they had, she began.

“Good morning, students!”

“Good morning” was the unenthusiastic synchronized reply from the exhausted students.

“Congratulations on the win, team, this was the first of many to come. I am also proud to announce that most of you listened and followed curfew, but for those of you who didn’t, I know we won’t have that problem again.” Ms. Johnson’s gaze landed on a few of the students who decided to test that rule before she cleared her throat. “Now I have called this short meeting just to inform you that the bus broke down on its way to pick us up, which means we will be staying an extra day here. All your parents have already been contacted and your teachers notified. With that being said, the same rules apply as last time, and do not think I won’t leave a student because I will. Happily. Now have a great day, and see you tomorrow morning at eight o’clock sharp.” Ms. Johnson walked out of the room, and once she was gone, the students jumped into conversation.

“So what do you want to do today?” Nyesha asked Tiana as she took a bite of her eggs, nearly moaning at how good it tasted.

“I don’t know. I was thinking we could go check out so—” Tiana cut her speech short as Dustin took a seat beside Nyesha, wrapping his arm around her.

“What’d I miss?” Dustin asked as he took up some of Nyesha’s food and flung it into his mouth with the flick of his wrist. Nye’s mouth dropped open at the sight of her food leaving her plate, but Dustin only shot her a cheeky grin before taking another piece.

“Tiana and I were just talking about what we wanted to do today,” Nyesha replied, and Dustin nodded.

“So what do we have planned?” Dustin asked, and Tiana shook her head no repeatedly.

“No. We”—Tiana motioned to herself and Nyesha—“will be spending the day together. You can go do what you do best and find someone else to harass.”

“I’m hurt,” Dustin said, placing his hand over his heart before shooting Tiana a grin, “but I’ve already cleared my schedule, so I guess you’re stuck with me.”

“Nyesha, tell him that we don’t need him.”

“Nyesha, tell her that you want me to come along.” Nyesha looked between her best friend and the guy she had begun having a crush on and just shrugged, unable to give neither one an answer.

“You two figure it out.” The two began arguing, throwing insults left and right, while Nyesha continued to eat her breakfast. Finally, the two stopped arguing when Janice and Nia took their seats at the table.

“So what are we doing today?” Nia asked, and Nyesha shrugged once again.

“That’s what we’re trying to figure out.”

“How about we go visit some tourist spots?” Janice offered, and everyone nodded, agreeing.
