Chapter 4

Luke drove to the airport while I gazed out the window pondering this mysterious trip. He’d earlier suggested we make a side-trip to Banff while we were in Calgary. I rubbed my left thumb over the fourth finger where my wedding band used to sit. Since exercising regularly, I lost enough weight to take it off. My kids reminded me occasionally since I met Luke that my wedding vows with their mother included ‘until death do us part’. I still carried the ring in my pocket while wondering if Luke had even noticed it missing. He had the radio tuned to an easy listening music station, and I looked over at him when he gently squeezed my shoulder.

“You look dashing in your suit. I noticed you appeared more relaxed when you tried on the finished product.”

It appeared he would continue, but he smiled and looked back at the road. “Go on, Luke, spit it out. It’s too late for me to change my mind now.”

His chuckle was deep and throaty. “That fitted shirt and those trousers with flat front show off your assets. You could pass as a model or porn star. Your nipples highlight the shirt and the pants hug your crotch while conforming to your perfect butt.” He glanced at my obvious shocked expression. “That you have no clue only adds to your charm. In short, you’re a gorgeous specimen of manhood.”

I rolled my eyes, shook my head, and resumed my admiration of the landscape as we drove to the Halifax Stanfield International Airport. Luke booked a direct flight which would take about five and a half hours. I must have smirked while thinking about ways Luke would dream up to pass the time because he gently elbowed me while reminding me to keep my thoughts pure.

Sipping coffee in the boarding lounge, I once again asked for some clue about this mysterious trip. As with all the other times, Luke just smirked and shook his head. Feeling cocky, I narrowed my eyes and said, “Follow me to the washroom and I’ll find creative ways to make you talk.” I would have previously melted at being so bold, but with Luke, it felt normal.

Luke raised his eyebrows. “Danny, are you saying you’d suck the information out of me? I’m shocked you would think I’m that easy.”

I stood and held out my hand. “Come along then, mister. Show me how hard it would be? To make you talk, I mean. I’m sure a gentle breeze would be enough to have you stiff.” I was about to continue when they announced our boarding call. Maybe I would be the one dreaming up ideas to pass the time while we were airborne.

It came as a surprise when the captain announced our arrival and the flight attendants made sure our chairs were upright and seatbelts securely fastened. Conversation with Luke came easily, and neither of realized how much time had passed.

Within an hour they checked us in and we were unpacking in our rooms at the Glenmore Inn.
