EIGHT

Luke stared into the darkness. He’d been lying in bed for about five hours. It was nearing 4:00 a.m. Maybe he’d slept a little; he wasn’t sure. He only knew that he’d been mentally reviewing everything Melanie had told him about the attack at The Mercantile last night. After that his thoughts had taken him back to what he knew about the explosion at her storage space. Then back to the attack outside the coffee shop. And then back to the initial attempt on her life at the rodeo grounds.

Once he’d thought through it all, picturing the situations, figuring out where his suspects were at the time of each attack, working out possible motives, he’d done it all again. And again.

His suspect list felt thin. It was simply a collection of all the people Melanie regularly came into contact with. He had no clues to point him toward anyone else. Sadly a lot of murders, assaults and robberies were committed by perpetrators known to the victim. And at the other end of the spectrum, the assailant could be some psychopath who randomly chose her as his victim. But if that were the case, Luke would have no way of figuring out who the psychopath was based on the information he had. So he’d turned his thoughts back to her friends, family and coworkers.

And wondered, for what felt like the millionth time, how anyone who knew Melanie could want to do her harm. He had to keep her safe. He had to find out who was attacking her and bring that person to justice. And then he and Melanie would go back to living their lives.

Jake and the kids were great, but Jake’s kind of life was not Luke’s kind of life. He’d figured that out a long time ago. He loved them, but he still felt restless every now and then. Edgy and itching for something more exciting. He wasn’t ready to settle down. Not even close to ready.

Maybe he’d let his emotions get tangled up in this case with Melanie. He’d let his thoughts cross the line and he’d momentarily considered a possible relationship with her in the future. But then he’d acknowledged the futility of that and hopped back across that line. He was a public servant. She was a citizen in danger. That was all.

Except she was in his house. Which was bugging him right now, because it felt like she was way too close. Yet at the same time he didn’t want her to go anywhere else. He wanted her here, with him, where he and his brother and their friends could keep her safe.

Luke looked at the bedside clock. It was 4:15 a.m. He flung off the covers, got out of bed and got ready for the day. He decided to brew some coffee and then head to the office to see what new leads he could drum up on this case.

The last few drops of coffee were gurgling into the carafe of the coffee maker when he heard shuffling footsteps.
