As Aiden, Vanessa and Namita discussed what to do next, Phavit slipped away. His mind and heart were in turmoil and he needed to be alone. He had been angry at Shanaya for keeping secrets from him. The mention of her meeting Yug had thrown him into a jealous rage but suddenly he felt drained. He had no right to be angry at her. Yug was Shanaya’s fiancé. Fiancé. The word kept hammering in his mind over and over. He was her past and they had every right to be with each other. As he walked towards his motorcycle, he heard Shanaya call his name.

‘Phavit, please,’ she was half running to catch up with him.

He stopped, waiting for her to reach him. She was looking flustered and her eyes were still a little pink from crying. She stopped in front of him, not really meeting his eyes.

‘You all right?’ he asked, swallowing back the urge to give her a hug.

She looked up, searching his face and he saw her tears. ‘I’m sorry for lying to you. I really wasn’t playing any game with you or anything. I just … I really think of you as my friend. Please believe me. I trust you more than anyone. Don’t hate me, please,’ she implored.

‘Shanaya!’ In spite of himself, he stepped towards her and enveloped her in a friendly hug.

He put his cheeks against her hair and said, ‘I don’t hate you. I don’t think I could, even if I wanted to.’

‘So are we okay? Are we still friends? You are not angry?’ she asked, eagerly.

He kissed her forehead. ‘We are still friends. You aren’t getting rid of me.’ And she smiled back. This time she gave him a tight hug. ‘I don’t think I could have … I can bear you to be angry with me,’ she said, smiling with relief.

As they continued toward his bike, she said, ‘There is something I needed to tell you.’

He looked at her sideways, his eyebrows raised. ‘It is … it is about … Nima,’ she said. She wet her lips. ‘I didn’t want to tell them about it.’ She nodded towards the house, indicating the rest of the group. ‘Not until I know for sure.’

‘What about Nima? What didn’t you want to tell them?’ he stopped by the bike, frowning. She wasn’t making any sense.

‘I think…I think…Nima is…lying to us.’ He could see she was relieved to get that out.

Phavit blinked at her unbelievingly. ‘What?! What is she lying about?’

‘I know it is stupid but….’ She was biting her lips again, worriedly looking away. She was clearly uncomfortable talking about their friend like that.

‘Tell me why do you think Nima is lying to us? And what do you think she is lying about?’

She looked at him then a little helplessly. ‘Remember when I said I met Yug yesterday and he showed me the photographs. When Yug chased after the guy in the balaclava, I think I saw Nima out there too. I am not sure it was her.
