The afternoon went better for Aurea. She hurried down corridors delivering messages in a timely manner and much to the Lady Gwyneth’s nodding approval. That woman now seemed in a much better state, as if having had her say, she was content to be her usual and garrulous complaining self.

Aurea greeted those she met on her sojourns with a graceful but not effusive demeanor. She held her head high as she walked, her lace-hemmed train trailing behind her in a regal manner. If sheer power of will and a show of pride could quench the fires of the gossips, then she would do her best at it.

It was on one of her deliveries, when she was carrying a letter to yet another lady of the Court, that Aurea again ran into Nigel, or rather he lay in waiting for her. It seemed to Aurea this was his favorite thing to do. He stood at the top of the staircase that led down to the great hall. He slouched against the stone banister of it in a casual manner, wearing a smarmy expression, complete with his nasty little smile.

Aurea’s first instinct was to turn away and head in some other direction, but stiffening her resolve, she marched straight ahead. She didn’t look at him, but instead gazed straight past him as if he weren’t there.

“Good day, mistress,” he said in his usual mocking way, doffing his hat.

Aurea didn’t even pause in her stride, nor did she acknowledge his greeting. She brushed on by him and started down the stairs. The smell of his too sweet perfume and the underlying odor of stale sweat lingered near her as she descended. It seemed to follow her like some poisonous cloud.

“What, no greeting?” he called after her from the top of the stairs.

Aurea didn’t bother to answer, but instead just kept moving, trying to put as much distance between them as she could manage and in as little time as possible. This despicable man, with his even more despicable innuendoes and slimy advances, would no longer intimidate her!
