Chapter 14

The Motewolin gathered us sulking adults around the compact kitchen table to explain what the ritual would involve. Vasile’s brooding face turned to the kitchen clock while it ticked meaningless minutes. She informed Vasile he would only be a spectator because everything was left up to me. He played his part. Looking at his ring, he grumbled something half out loud. The most potent creature in the world needed to face the deficiency to help. My time to enter the battle arrived.

To complete the magical ritual, I would be required to harness all elemental energies and go into a deep trance or dream-like state. Once inside the dream, or the other dimension, I was required to find and secure a golden crown. The quest sounded easy, but I knew better.

While in the dimension, I would become vulnerable to demons and other dream-walking witches, who sought to steal my birthright. I would be on my own with only my wits and newly developed powers to survive. As a test of worthiness, I would face and conquer my worst fear. If I passed the cosmic test, I would be free to return holding the crown, powers literally in hand. But, failure meant death while in my trance. My mind raced to isolate my worst fear because I harbored a ton.

The observers must figure out the right time to bring me out my dream. The solution was to cross over an observer with me. As soon as I held the crown, the person dreaming with me would wake up, and bring me out of my trance. The vague ritual still presented a considerable risk for those involved and watching from the sidelines. Besides, my malevolent coven still prowled out there.

My upright back, and even voice enforced my determination to not cave under pressure but rise to the challenges. “Maggie, it’s a lot to ask, but can you ask someone from your tribe play the part of dream walker?”

Vasile threw up a palm to pointed at me, “No. I will do it.” We looked far from shocked.

“Look, Vas. You already told me how little I mean to you. Leave witch business to the professionals. You’ll score your weapon, don’t you worry.” He refused to meet my eyes, and I decided to twist the dagger deeper. ” You decided to risk my life with the Vampire Nation. You made your choice, and now I make mine.” When I spoke to him, my eyes stayed on Maggie’s face. Disgust prevented me from making eye contact with the undead bastard.

She piped, ignoring the tension. “Not so fast guys and gals. You can’t dream walk. Vampires don’t dream like humans because you go into a state near a coma.”

I snickered, “I thought he was a heavy sleeper.” My snide comment made him rise from the table with a heavy sigh, squeezing his hands in jean pockets

“Nope. Since they screwed nature out of death, they are close to death every time they sleep.” She shot Vasile a pitiful glance and shrugged her shoulders.
