HALF an hour later, Daryl lay motionless on the bed. The Hispanic nurse had given him an injection of some medication that, she promised, would relax him. It left him feeling utterly drained.
A black female officer was now standing at the door. The nurse used what looked like a huge toothpick to take scrapings from under Daryl’s fingernails. The detritus was slipped into a small, manila packet. Next, his mouth was swabbed. The nurse lifted his gown and combed the hairs of his groin, and then turned him onto his side and combed through the hairs on his buttocks. She told him to roll onto his back again and used scissors to cut small tufts of hair from his head and pubic area. The policewoman watched the entire process, observing dispassionately as the samples were sealed and labeled.
Dr. Carwood took over, inserting a swab into Daryl’s urethra. It hurt like hell despite the medication he’d been given. He was rolled onto his side again, his knees positioned up toward his chest, and another swab was inserted into his rectum, which hurt even worse. He couldn’t stop himself from gasping.
“I’m sorry,” Dr. Carwood whispered as he grimaced. “We’re almost done here.”
He was rolled onto his stomach, and the nurse took pictures of the cuts and bruises that crisscrossed his shoulders, buttocks, and the backs of his thighs. She took pictures of the bruises around his neck and the injuries to his face.
Then it was over. The policewoman and the doctor huddled over the evidence that had been gathered from him, and Daryl lay wishing that he would pass out again. Or die.
“Okay, Mr. Maven, you can urinate now.” It was the nurse. She was standing beside the bed.
He started to get up.
“I don’t think standing up would be a good idea right now,” the nurse said. “Those injections we gave you will make it hard for you to keep your balance. Here, use this.”
He looked down and saw the plastic male urinal she had discreetly placed beside him.
“Thanks,” he mumbled. He flipped the cover off, placed the urinal on the mattress between his thighs and slid his penis into the opening. He peed for what seemed an eternity while the nurse busied herself setting up the examination area for the suturing of his more severe wounds.
“Uh… I’m done,” he said finally. The nurse turned, and he lifted the urinal toward her. As it came into his view, he sucked in a breath, horrified.
His urine was tinted a deep burgundy from dark blood.
