Getting to the photography studio with Brett is about as awkward as I was expecting. The drive over was quiet. He was being civil, which at first freaked me out because it’s so unlike him.

The studio is completely decked out in white. White backdrop, white overhead lights. The entire space is crammed with a heap of photography equipment, the only open areas being in the reception and kitchen area we walked through to get in here and space on the floor in front of the camera.

I think I just walked into every girl’s dream when I see the other four guys from Deakin, all shirtless except for Ryker who’s wearing a tight, fitted, black wife-beater top.

Colton is wearing a pair of black angel wings that span out and stop just under his knee. It’s hard for me to contain my giggle as we join them on the studio floor.

“Nice wings,” I taunt. Colton shoots me a dirty look. “Sorry, couldn’t help it. I had to say something.”

“If you weren’t Brett’s girl, I’d show you just how much of an angel I could be,” he purrs, waggling his eyebrows up and down.

Laughing, I ask, “Do you actually fight with those things on? They’re not a hindrance?”

“Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t. Depends on who I’m fighting. I’m not going to go up against Blaze wearing them, but Slider or Chi I will. My babies are highly flammable,” he says, petting one of his wings as if he was stroking a pet.

“Okay!” a high-pitched female voice comes from behind us. “Welcome, Heatwave,” she says grabbing hold of my hand and shaking it vigorously, her red-rimmed glasses sliding down her nose from the movement. Her orange hair is in frizzy tight curls and sits in a messy bun atop her head. “I’m Olivia, I’ll be running this shoot today.” She looks over at the others. “Welcome back, boys. How about we get started with you while we get Heatwave into makeup to cover up some of that bruising. Which fighter managed to do that, anyway?”

“I didn’t realise I went so hard,” Steve says quietly, looking anywhere but at me.

I shrug. “All good. I do want a rematch though.”

A collective “oooooh” breaks out. “I’m putting my money on her,” Palmer says.

“Me too,” Ryker adds.

“Anytime, princess,” Steve says now smiling, his cockiness from when I first met him returning once again.

“Are you sure you want to nickname me that? Won’t look too good when you get beaten by a princess, now would it?”

“I beat him all the time, and he doesn’t seem to care,” Palmer says. “Then again, I’m a queen, not a princess,” he adds, winking at me.

“Follow me, Heatwave,” Olivia cuts into our joking around. She leads me into a small room at the back where there’s a tall woman with a ridiculous amount of makeup on and a chair facing a mirror. “Vidia will cover up those horrid bruises, my dear. Anything that can’t be covered can be digitally altered later.”

Olivia leaves the room, and I hear her shout to the guys, “Okay, boys, let’s get you oiled up.
