'Mmm, we do realise that,' drawled Thane. `However, we appear to have digressed. ..' He eyed her implicitly.

So much for attempting to change the topic, sighed Adair, wondering why she didn't just refuse outright.

Probably because she had tried that tack before-quite unsuccessfully!-she recalled with a grimace.

`Yes, well, I'm afraid the best I can promise is that I'll come if I possibly can,' she proposed, but without actually intending to do anything of the kind. `Now, I really must go. I'm late already.' She was on her way before she had even finished speaking.

Ànd I'll ensure that you keep to that!' Thane called after her smoothly.

Adair cast a frowning glance over her shoulder, but didn't stop moving, and with a dismissive toss of her long hair she continued on to the motel.

CHAPTER SIX

As it so happened, Adair finished her tasks in the restaurant and kitchen some time before ten that evening, and was happily congratulating herself on the thought that she would be in bed and asleep before Thane even returned to the motel when her mother caught at her arm as they headed for their own quarters.

Òh, do go and check for me to see if there are any late breakfast menus in the box outside the office, Adair,' Gemma Newman requested. Ì meant to look earlier, but then it completely slipped my mind.'

`That's OK, it's no trouble,' Adair smiled easily, already changing direction and making for the door that gave on to the courtyard.

Outside, the air was crystal-clear, the stars brilliant against their inky backdrop, and she rounded the corner of the office with a light step, although only to have her pace slow markedly on seeing the lights aglow in two particular units opposite, and from one of which came the hum of conversation, interspersed with the clink of glassware and the sudden rumble of quiet mirth. So their celebration was already under way, Adair mused in surprise as she absently extracted the three late orders for breakfast from the box provided.

As she was about to swiftly retrace her steps, one of the doors was abruptly opened to spill strong light into the courtyard, catching Adair directly in its beam, and Egan Callahan emerged before she could disappear back around the corner.

`Hello, Adair,' he greeted her warmly. `You're on your way to join us for a drink too, are you? Is Narelle with you?'

'Narelle?' she repeated blankly in confusion.

`Yes, she said she'd be coming over once the work in the restaurant was finished.'

Òh, I didn't know,' she said lamely, moving restlessly from one foot to the other. She didn't want to stand there talking. She just wanted to disappear-before someone next door perhaps overheard and came to see what was happening!

`Well, never mind, I expect she'll be along in a minute or two,' Egan Callahan went on in the same friendly fashion. `The two of us may as well join the party while we're waiting, though.' Already he was making a move to grasp the handle of the appropriate door.
