CHAPTER 10
JEHANNE
HEARING
Okay, picture this: A friend comes up to you and exclaims, “Dude! I was out in my yard last night when I heard this voice from God telling me to go put on armor and fight for my country!” Would that seem just a little crazy to you? Well, someone actually did experience this crazy “voice from God”—in fact, it was a 13-year-old girl named Jehanne (zhawn). And this is her story.
Jehanne grew up in France in a small village called Domremy. At an early age, as a committed Catholic, she was taught by her mother to say her prayers. Jehanne also learned to sew and spin on a spinning wheel and could soon spin as well as any woman in the village. From the door of her house, Jehanne could see a forested area called the Polled Wood. Legend said that a maiden who would do amazing things would come through the woods one day. Jehanne knew that legend, but she dismissed it, saying “I had no faith in that.”
I’ll let her tell you the next part of her story in her own words (translated from French to English):
When I was thirteen I had a voice from God to help me govern myself. The first time, I was terrified. The voice came to me about noon: it was summer, and I was in my father’s garden … There was a great light all about … I saw it many times before I knew it was St. Michael [the archangel] … He was not alone, but … attended by heavenly angels … And when they left me, I wept, and I wished that they might have taken me with them. Above all, Saint Michael told me that I must be a good child, and that God would help me … He told me the pitiful state of the Kingdom of France. And he told me that I must go to [aid] the King of France … Twice and thrice a week the voice told me that I must depart and go into France … the voice told me that I would raise the siege before Orleans… And it told me to go to… [the] captain of the town, who would give me men to go with me. And I answered the voice [and said] that I was a poor girl and knew nothing of riding and warfare.1
