The rest of the day unfolded fairly normally, considering what little intimacies had happened between the three of them. They were back to their games, although somewhat subdued. Back to entertaining each other the way they had when the duke had been home.
Never played classical piano and cards equally well. He quoted speeches from famous plays, entertaining them with nuance and style. After dinner, he even agreed to go for a walk about the grounds at dusk where he picked wildflowers and poured them over Damion’s hair where they tangled and sparked their white petals, making Damion smile and laugh.
Vanni trailed behind them, the sea-wind whipping about his locks of blond hair. He smiled to see Damion smile. But inside, he was all shadow and no grace. Bereft. Left out.
The wind rippled through the trees at the edge of the woods. It shot cold air straight to Vanni’s heart. They all wore their cloaks even though it was summer, but the breeze could not be intimidated.
Never’s black cloak, lined with red, rose up behind him like great wings. Damion chased the flapping material, laughing, before Never whirled about and caught the edges himself, whipping them around Damion, pulling him into the folds of the cape. He bent his head.
Vanni stopped, turned his head to look away. But he couldn’t see anything anyway. No doubt a shared, secret kiss. A touch to his cool cheek. A stroke to his silken hair.
Vanni could almost feel it himself, how Never’s lips massaged the mouth. How the hot tongue delicately invaded private space.
Vanni heard Never say, “Are you cold?”
Damion’s reply: “A little.”
Vanni had already begun to head back to the front entrance of the Keep. He didn’t want to hear or see any more. Tonight the ocean wind would be relentless. Even now, the sea gave off a shuddering roar. He’d add an extra blanket to his bed. Have some hot mulled wine.
“Vanni, wait for us,” Never shouted above the increasing gusts.
Vanni pretended not to hear them. That wine sounded better and better.
Once indoors, with the latches shut securely behind them, Never became even more presumptuous. To Damion, he said boldly, “Go to your room and wait for me there.” He did not even smile.
Damion seemed not to notice. His eyebrows shot up. His face sweetly darkened and his eyes became glazed. “Yes!” was all he said as he bounded up the stone stairs.
Never turned a cool, storm-blue gaze on Vanni. One side of his mouth quirked. “What?” he asked.
“I didn’t say anything.” Vanni replied. He wanted to punch that look off Never’s face. Or kiss it. He was so confused.
Never approached him. He ran his hand gently down Vanni’s back. For a moment, Vanni could not breathe but covered it well. Never’s hungry smile gleamed in his eyes. Vanni felt empty inside, waiting for something to happen. Waiting for—for what? The moment he could freely touch him, hold him, have him?
But that was not going to happen!
Yet at this juncture, more than anything
