Chapter 12

Dawn

“Ambush!” yelled Gotthard in a panic.

A small bullet whistled through the air, slamming into the back of the man’s head from one of the nearby houses that they passed through, penetrating his skull and killing him instantly.

“Break into the houses and kill those sons of bitches!” snarled Gelmar. Few of his men heard his command above the shrill sounds of the projectiles; those who did charged towards the houses, only to be met with javelins thrown out the windows. Some managed to back away, some blocked the flying spears with their shields, while some were skewered without knowing what was going on.

Even then, Gelmar’s men doggedly tried to push their way into the houses, only to find the entrances blocked with large rectangular shields covered in yellowish-white sap with a red eye drawn in the centres. Gelmar’s men tried to bash through, but the shields absorbed the impact from their weapons.

Gelmar caught a whiff of the shields—they smelled unusually pungent. Gelmar concluded that they were covered with the sap of bluecatcher mushrooms, a giant, blue, luminescent, carnivorous species found on the second layer and lower, which used its sticky sap to catch prey before encapsulating it for digestion. Their sap worked well as adhesive for wood, leather, and cloth—he was loath to admit that it worked just as well in sticking the stone of his men’s weapons to the shields.

The men wavered. Not only had they played into another scheme of their enemies, but their numbers were not that much greater than those of their enemies. The only advantage Gelmar’s men had left was that they were more experienced in combat, but that was meaningless if they couldn’t reach their targets.

Projectiles assaulting them from all sides, Gelmar’s men huddled together, shields raised, and formed a shield wall of their own. Because their shields were smaller, their wall was not as effective as Lev’s, but it managed to protect them from most of the shots.

“Huddle closer and charge!” shouted Gelmar, intending to overlap the shields into a tight shell. His men obediently huddled closer, but before they could charge forward, something fell on top of them, tangling them together.

“Nets?” Gelmar exclaimed. He peeked through a gap in the shield shell to find women, children, and a couple of elders glaring down at them with seething hate. He could not place them, but some of them looked familiar.

“Hey… Isn’t that Pog’s wife?” yelled Gotthard, tangled with him. Pog… That’s right, he had a wife and kids, Gelmar realized. Are they all… families of those we’ve killed—

“B-Boss! Look!” interrupted another soldier, pointing to their back where bogeys holding spears, shields, and slings were walking out of their houses, grouping into the same formation as the ones before them.

Gelmar sharply inhaled. “Cut the nets!” he screamed.

The first formation left their barricade and began its approach, followed by the second formation. Gelmar’s men, ignoring the unceasing onslaught of rocks and bullets, the pain from their wounds, and the unmoving bodies of those who had fallen before them, managed to cut themselves free.
