Dad hugs me as soon as I walk in. “Avery, thank God you’re all right. I saw the news, and then what you said. Tom called and confirmed everything.” I think he means to say more, but he either stops himself or can’t find the words. He pulls me tight to him again. I hate that in this moment I think about my boobs squishing up against him, and how I wish that weren’t the case. I hug him back, though. He needs this more than I do. Because, yeah, I’m scared and angry, but I also remember how haunted Reverend Matthison looked. If he didn’t have anything to do with Mary’s murder, then Dad’s on the verge of feeling the same as he did. I never want that for him.

We separate and I see an officer out the back door. “How long has he been here?”

“About a half hour.” Dad looks out the front, where Officer Howard is stationed, again. “I don’t think I ever want you leaving the house.” He looks me over, as if seeing me in some entirely new light. “What happened today? Why did everyone run out? It looked like Columbine.”

I reach for my phone to show him the answer, but stop. “When’s Mom going to be home?”

“Any minute now.”

“Tyler?”

“They’re releasing them for a half day, so it should be a half hour or so.”

I take a deep breath, I think the first I’ve been able to all day. “Well, let’s wait for them before I answer that.”

Dad looks in my eyes, and I see his pain. Parents really do get the short end sometimes. “I love you, Avery. And I know that there are two cops outside willing to shoot down this monster, but please know that I am willing to take a bullet for you.”

“Dad.” It’s all I can manage before I lose it, and slump to the floor, much like I did when Tom came with the news about Mary.
