Chapter Six

Paxton swung onto his horse and made his way towards Windsor’s at the usual time he went by to exercise the horses. His cell rang, distracting him. Paxton tapped his Bluetooth and answered.

“Hello.”

“Paxton, I’m running a little late. I’ll be there closer to seven.” Windsor sounded distracted.

Windsor had been working late. He’d been showing Luc the ropes of the firm. Since his client base was so large, he’d taken Luc around first to meet the business owners in town, then to meet the various ranchers he worked for. Some were in neighbouring towns. When Paxton had met Luc, he’d been impressed by his sharp wit and how genuine he seemed.

There had been many nights Luc had come to either his or Windsor’s house—depending where Paxton and Windsor were spending the night—for dinner.

“Okay. I’ll hold dinner for you.”

“Thanks. See you later,” Windsor replied.

“Bye.”

Windsor hung up and Paxton continued on his way. They’d fallen into a comfortable pattern, after two weeks. The night Paxton had finally got to know Kaden, he’d realised the man wasn’t such an ass after all. They still had their movie nights and sometimes went out after to bowl with Kaden and Zay. They’d even got HC, Blayne, Morgan and Gibson to go.

Paxton grimaced. But not Thomas—he was still distant and cold. Windsor’s place came into sight and Paxton frowned when shock filled him as he recognised the horse tethered by the stable. He put Sekhmet next to the other Arabian, then swung off the saddle and tied him next to the one already there. Paxton stroked Sekhmet briefly, then petted the other horse. It nickered then went back to munching. Paxton went around them and entered the stable, immediately noticing the fresh feed and clean stalls.

“I already took them out for exercise, Dad,” Thomas said behind him.

Paxton closed his eyes briefly and relief washed over him as Thomas spoke directly to him for the first time in weeks. He faced him and Thomas’ gaze was shadowed as he www.total-e-bound.com

approached him. Paxton recognised the slump in his shoulders and his walk—it meant Thomas wasn’t sure of his welcome. Paxton opened his arms. Thomas sped up and practically tackled him when he reached him. Thomas hugged him fiercely and Paxton was further surprised—he’d expected a quick hug before Thomas stepped back—Thomas wasn’t as expressive or touchy as his brothers.

“Talk to me,” Paxton said.

Thomas released him then walked to the wall. He slid down it and sat on the stable floor. Paxton sat beside him. Thomas’ head was bent, his curly red hair obscuring his face.

Thomas glanced at him, his brown eyes full of regret.

“I’m sorry, Dad. I just—” He stopped.

Paxton waited for him to continue.

“I didn’t want him to take Daddy’s place. Over the years, we’ve all seen men come on to you, and you never noticed. Or even when they said something, you didn’t give them a chance. But before you even knew, I could feel it in my gut that Windsor would be different.
