Chapter Five

Aden and Ross had just planned on having a small ceremony, but before they knew it, all their friends and family had found out about the event, and it turned out to be one huge party.

Not that Aden minded much, but he was sure the restaurant at which they ended up having the makeshift reception would never forget them. Not only had they taken over the entire place, but some of Ross’ PJ buddies had shown up, and those guys could drink. They turned out to be pretty rowdy, too. But Aden had loved every moment of it, and it was a day that he would never forget.

The next three months seemed to fly by, and before Aden knew it, he was driving Ross to the airport to be deployed. They didn’t talk much on the drive there, both of them in a somber mood.

Aden parked the car, and they both walked inside. There were already many PJs and their families gathered, all of them saying their goodbyes. It broke Aden’s heart when he saw how many of the men had young children that they were leaving behind. Some were even leaving behind pregnant wives. It made him feel selfish for wanting to keep Ross home.

Ross turned and hugged him. “It won’t be long before I’ll be home again.”

“Promise me you’ll be safe,” Aden begged.

“You take care of those yellow ribbons for me.”

“You know I will.”

Aden held on tight and blinked rapidly to hold back the tears. He tried to contain a sob but must not have been successful because Ross said, “Hey, none of that, I’ll be back.”

“And I’ll be waiting for you. No matter how long it takes.”

“I love you,” Ross said.

“And I’ll always love you,” Aden replied.

They shared one last kiss before Ross walked away. Ross took a few steps then he stopped, turned back and waved one last time. Aden returned the wave, all the while biting his bottom lip to hold back the tears that were threatening to fall.

The rest of the PJs filtered out until only the family members were left. A blonde woman who was around Aden’s age came up to him. “So you’re Ross’ husband. My husband, Caleb, talks about Ross all the time.”

“I hope he says good things about him,” Aden said with a watery laugh.

She gave him a knowing smile while she put an arm around him. “It’s hard to see them go. Isn’t it?”

“Yeah. It’s his second deployment.”

“This is Caleb’s sixth.”

“Tell me it gets easier?” Aden pleaded.

The blonde shook her head. “I wish I could, but it doesn’t. My name is Bonnie, by the way.”

“I’m Aden.”

“Well, Aden, welcome to our little club.”

“I would like to say that I’m happy to be part of it, but right now I’m too busy missing Ross,” Aden said with a wry chuckle.

“I know how you’re feeling. What you need to do is join us for our Saturday lunches.”

“Your Saturday lunches?” Aden echoed. “What’s that?”

“We all take turns hosting them at our homes. We get together and chat.
