Sherwood pulled his bright, new patrol car to a halt in front of Carmen’s apartment. He enjoyed driving his new car so much that Harry had been relegated to the passenger seat whenever they were together. His sergeant did not like being chauffeured by the boss.
“It’s not proper for a sergeant to be squired about by an inspector,” he sniffed.
“You’ll get used to it. Why don’t you use your freed-up brain capacity to think about what we’re going to do.”
“What we’re going to do is get ourselves drowned.” Harry hated the plan Sherwood had concocted for exploring the underground river. He could think of a thousand things that might go wrong and he’d already told Sherwood at least nine hundred of them.
“Now if this little slip of a girl,” Sherwood nodded at Carmen who had appeared at her apartment door, “can handle it, I think we two great bruisers should be OK.”
Harry just snorted, but he got out of the car, opened the door for Carmen and then got into the back.
She was in a cheery mood. “Was that a ray of sunshine I saw this morning?” she asked.
“If it was, it was the first one in the month of September,” said Harry, grouchily.
Sherwood looked at her carefully. He was getting used to her mood swings. “You still all right about this?” he asked, putting one hand on her shoulder for a moment. “We don’t have to do it.”
She gave him a brilliant smile. She’d been practicing. She was determined not to always be scowling like an old harridan whenever Sherwood was around. It took real effort, but seeing him actually did make her feel like smiling more these days.
“I can’t tell you how ready I am, Sherwood. All the delays have been driving me crazy. Now that we’re finally underway, I feel positively relaxed and excited at the same time.”
He nodded, looked over his shoulder and pulled the car out into traffic. If he’d done more than glance behind them, he might have noticed the black sedan that pulled out after theirs and stayed half a block back as it followed them.
They parked at the Piccadilly tube maintenance entrance where Sherwood and Harry had first entered the sub-tunnel system. Sherwood got out and spoke briefly to one of the Bobbies standing guard. The man confirmed that two Department of Public Works men had already gone below with a generator and winch setup. Sherwood had given instructions to let the men pass without explaining the nature of their mission. Bobbies took orders from Scotland Yard inspectors without question.
They descended the gritty steps and entered the sub-tunnel, following the lights set up by the transportation workers. Both Harry and Sherwood were armed with revolvers. They rarely carried firearms, but after seeing the strange creature, Sherwood did not intend to place Carmen in any more danger than necessary.
They worked their way down the gloomy tunnel to where the men waited. One of them grunted as Sherwood came up. “Glad you’re the one taking responsibility for this,” he said.
