Thomas Granton took a deep breath and rose from his prayer mat. He remained on his knees a moment, contemplating the bare wall in front of him. He was facing Mecca by staring at the wall, and the knowledge, along with his daily prayer time, gave him comfort in light of the efforts to which he now dedicated his life.
He left the prayer room and went to change into a proper suit and tie. Rahmil was coming for a visit, and the man named Pullman was scheduled for later in the afternoon. It was going to be a busy day.
Grantonâs conversion to Islam took him by surprise. As an agnostic for most of his life, he gave very little thought to anything spiritual. Then a major earthquake shook Afghanistan and Pakistan and left scores dead and injured. The need for help, food and supplies, was more than Granton Charities could handle alone, but Granton led the way by personally working on scene with relief efforts. Witnessing the faith of those affected by the earthquake, he wanted to explore more about what made them so devout. Within three months, he left his agnosticism behind and joined the faithful. From there, he saw the dark side of the Westâs prejudice against Islam and pledged as much as he could to support jihad efforts. Peaceful outreach accomplished little.
But he had to be careful because working with people like Rahmil made him a target should the authorities get wind of the connection.
Tammy knew about his new faith, but she didnât know the rest of the story. He worked hard to keep her shielded from the other side; any consequence he faced shouldnât fall on her, too. Of course, if the worst happened, sheâd feel blowback, no doubt. And while she might live under a cloud for a period of time, her life wouldnât be ruined.
He completed the Windsor knot and admired his appearance in the wall-length mirror. Donning his suit jacket, he proceeded down a spiral staircase to make sure he had tea ready for Rahmilâs arrival. The wide circular entryway at the bottom of the steps was almost all marble, with various expensive decorations abundant. A giant painting of the original builders of the Granton estate, his great, great grandparents, hung on a wall facing the thick oak double doors. He was alone on his estate. The house and grounds staff had the day off. He wanted no stray eyes on him when Rahmil showed up.
He was waiting on the porch steps when Rahmil drove his car up the access road to the circular driveway. Marble columns supported an overhang stretching from one corner to the other; the Granton family home looked like a castle, a stone and marble monstrosity known throughout the UK as the center of charity for those in need. It was Thomas Grantonâs personal crusade. He was in charge of the family legacy, the money, and while he and his people worked to multiply the already impressive coffers, he wanted to do something good with what heâd been given.
