Chapter Seven

The hike through the snow-covered woods was sheer torture. The kind of grueling exercise they'd put them through during recruit training for the SAS. He assumed the SEALs would be no different. They had a name for it, ‘Hell Week.’ Maybe they could try sending rookies into the Canadian boonies, lugging a flight case that felt like it weighed a ton, and see how they made out.

They reached Olsen’s secluded house just before dark. She banged on the door, and he opened it. He could only be a Norwegian. The guy even wore a patterned sweater to prove it. As well as a grave, serious, Scandinavian expression. Like his daughter, he possessed blond hair and blue eyes. His beard was in character, and it wasn't difficult to imagine his ancestors rowing longships across to England to raid and pillage. Or even across the Atlantic, if the historians and archaeologists were to be believed. He carried himself ramrod erect and looked tough enough, despite his age. A throwback to a lifetime in the military.

He gave her a welcoming smile. “Freya! Why didn’t you tell me you were planning on a visit? I’d have got a hot meal ready for you and aired the spare bedroom.”

She explained it was a spur-of-the-moment decision. “I’ll tell you more later, but in the meantime, my friend is all in. He’s carried that case for ten miles, refused all offers of help, and I reckon he’s about to collapse.”

He looked at Logan, sized him up with a keen appraising glance, and rushed out to help. “Let me take that from you.” He took the case and gasped when he felt the weight, “Ten miles, is that right? Most men couldn’t carry this for more than a mile without giving up. I imagine you’re ex-military.”

“That’s correct, Sir.”

They went inside, and he dragged ingredients from the freezer and prepared a hot meal for them. They downed it with relish, venison he’d shot earlier in the season, with heaps of vegetables prepared with spices. It tasted good and washed down with unlimited mugs of hot Java, he decided it was one of the best meals he’d eaten. Afterward, they returned to the living room. Olsen seated himself in what was his favorite armchair and listened while Freya spelled out everything they’d been through since Logan arrived at her door with Al Mercer.

When she’d finished, Logan took over and explained about the call he’d received from Mercer when he was in London. When he’d finished, he told him everything he knew about what’d happened in Afghanistan when his SAS troop had shared missions with Mercer’s SEAL Team. Olsen was a good listener, and he heard them out in silence. When they’d finished, he took several minutes to get his thoughts together.

“You need to find out who is behind it. That could be difficult. However, I do have contacts in the intelligence community, and by coincidence, I’m meeting a guy tomorrow for lunch in Montréal. How about you come with
