“I BROUGHT dinner,” Graham’s voice carried through the house.
Trigger turned around from setting the table and shook his head. “You don’t have to yell. I can hear a bug crawl across the floor so I can damn sure hear you come in the front door.”
Graham’s smile turned into a frown. “Sorry. I didn’t think I was loud. Did you take anything for the headache?” He closed the distance between them, setting two large bags of food on the table.
“My head is fine.” Trigger collected glasses and filled them with ice after placing a pitcher of tea next to the food.
“Uh-huh.” Graham unloaded the fare. “Then why are you so edgy?”
“I’m hungry.” Trigger poured the drinks then sat down.
“After you ate all that for breakfast? What did you do today? Run a marathon?” Graham took a seat across from Trigger.
Trigger snorted. “Not on my to-do list if you recall, Icy.” He dug into the pasta with gusto.
Graham glanced around the room, a slow grin spreading across his lips. “You read the rest of the book?”
“Yeah. It’s pretty good, actually. Never thought much about the women’s league or how it started, but it’s fairly interesting.” With nothing else to do and fighting boredom, Trigger had found the biography a nice reprieve. He’d sat down and read the whole story. By the time he finished, the hours had slipped by.
“Sounds like a nice day.”
“I’d rather have been at practice.”
“I’d rather have been here reading.” Graham flashed a smile in between bites of food.
“That bad?” The baseball season lasted most of the year, and days off were hit and miss. With so many games and practice sessions, a player faced many ups and downs, which was to be expected. Slumps were as much a part of the game as home runs and strikeouts.
“Nah. Not really. Just long.” Graham took a large drink.
Trigger nodded. Personally, he didn’t mind the weight room or catching for the various pitchers. The running stunk. He’d much rather leave that particular chore to the canines who seemed to excel in speed and quickness.
“I never asked. Why baseball?”
Trigger considered the question for a moment and opted to go for the truth. “Size wasn’t as important.”
Graham stopped chewing and stared at him.
“I was the runt of the family. With four older brothers.”
“Ouch.” Graham winced.
“It wasn’t so horrible. I hit a late growth spurt and bypassed them all.” He grinned ruefully as he recalled the summer he’d topped even his father in height and build. Thanks to his athletic tendencies and the constant workouts, he outmassed the whole lot of them. Much to his siblings’ and father’s chagrin.
“Paybacks?”
“You better believe it.”
Graham chuckled. “I bet that was something to see. You turning the tables and kicking their rears.”
“It was a good day.” Trigger remembered the grudging respect finally bestowed on him. It still existed to this very day. “Baseball just fit me. I loved the sport and seemed to excel. Agents and scouts were watching me from middle school onward. It’s all I wanted to do.
