Chapter Ten

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish.

Sunday of that week.

Lizzy made the Sign of the Cross as she knelt before Our Blessed Mother’s statue. Mass was finely done and Lizzy remembered Mother’s Day was approaching along with the wedding season. Lizzy finished her prayers before she heard commotion by the alter Narrowing her eyes, she realized it was Mr. Darcy. He was talking with Father Dennis who was pastor and they seemed to be in a serious conversation.

“For whatever reason he’s not making it quiet.” Lizzy thought as she held her Latin Missal. Wondering why he looked so upset, Lizzy decided to approach. If she knew one thing about gentlemen interrupting wasn’t proper.

“I wonder though how he’s not talking with him outside.”

As she began to approach, their conversation became audible. She was amazed Mr. Darcy was here after seeing him the past week.

“Father? I’m am not making a joke! She walked in immodestly dressed I had to come and say something about it!” Mr. Darcy exclaimed.

She paused when Father Dennis looked at Mr. Darcy as he replied.

“And you’ve been angered by it since, my son?”

“Yes, Father; I have.”

Not wishing to intrude she thought maybe she should be moving along but then Father Dennis turned and noticing her, smiled as he gently gestured for her to approach. Lizzy watched as Mr. Darcy looked in her direction and his countenance changed. As she walked over, she observed how his expression softened as Father Dennis whispered.

“Come here, Lizzy, my child. I’m sure you’re wondering why Mr. Darcy is a little bothered from his conversation with me.”

“Yes. I couldn’t help but overhear a little bit of it.” Lizzy answered but then Father Dennis gestured towards the Tabernacle.

All three turned and genuflected before Father Dennis used his hands to inform the two they could talk elsewhere. As the three exited, Lizzy was curious because of what she’d overheard about “she was immodestly dressed” and she wanted to know who he was meaning. Father closed the doors leading to the Church before he turned and looking from Lizzy to Mr. Darcy, who was explained.

“Miss Lizzy? I’m sure you’ve met our new parishioner, Mr. Darcy?”

“Yes, Father.”

“We actually met when the Miraculous Medal was being distributed.” The tall Mr., Darcy replied and Lizzy noticed he was turning a color. She wondered for what reason but she didn’t voice this as Father answered.

“Yes indeed! The miracle of the Miraculous Medal! I’m happy to hear the two of you met when we were giving them out! How are you enjoying Our Lady’s Medal?”

Lizzy smiled as she softly replied.

“I like how She’s there when I need Her, Father. Her influence is loving.”

“And I’m thankful for that, my child.” Father replied and his expression was tender and soft. As he looked at Lizzy, she knew he was reading her silent persecution. From within the depths of her soul, Lizzy knew she couldn’t hide her persecution of her Catholic Faith. Father Dennis knew about the behind the scenes with her Protestant stepmother and
