I walk into The Black Rose and find Kat working. “Hey, Kat, I was just grabbing some invoices for Dana. How have you been?” I try for normal. Is this my normal? I have no idea anymore.

She stops wiping under bottles on the shelf and sets everything down. “Good, just setting up for tonight. How are things going over at the brewery?”

“Good there, too. It’s a new start for me, which is good. Vegas and Dana have been giving me normal shit to do. Weird, having to grow up at my age, but it’s helping for me to learn new things. I feel like I’m a different person but the same person all at the same time and that’s confusing,” I scrunch my nose at her. “It was a lot more fun being DJ Jammin’ Jenn than waking up early and learning about accounts and shit.”

Kat laughs and hands me a coke. She pours one for herself and moves to come and sit at the bar next to me. “Your face looked nauseated saying that. That’s good. There really never is a moment that you stop and say about yourself, ‘Hey, I know this person.’ Truth is, we all are changing all the time.” She pauses for a few seconds, then asks, “I heard about Cuervo being your pops. How are you dealing with that news?”

“Not so great, really. I feel so angry deep inside and I want to let go of it, but I can’t. I want Cuervo to suffer for leaving me behind as a kid. Then, to have what happened a few years ago, what that man did to me… I’ve lost so much because of them.”

“Jenn, you have every right to be mad at Cuervo for not telling you the truth about who he was. Sometimes we keep things from the ones we love thinking that we’re protecting them, only to let it go for too long and then the lies become our lives. Maybe you can talk with Cuervo and ask him about what happened back then?” Kat raises an eyebrow at me.

“Wow, you’re an asshole. I guess you’re right though, I still don’t know the whole story.”

“Go ask him, Jenn. I can tell you he is a man who’s made mistakes, yes, just like we all have. Don’t push him away until you know the whole story. He might surprise you.”

I sit and think a minute on Kat’s words and advice, and something tells me that she’s more invested into this conversation than the normal girlfriend catch-up talk.

“Kat, are you hiding some of your own lies in that pep talk. I think it’s time you spilled them too.” This time I raise my own brow at her in return.

Kat nods her head in understanding and smirks back at me, realizing that she walked herself into her own trap. Inside, I mentally pump my fist in the air like, fuck yeah, I’m back, baby.

We sit in silence for a few moments before Kat turns to face me directly.
