Chapter Sixteen

As we’re leaving the dining hall, common room, or whatever this massive facility is called, Sara touches my arm. “Nicky, we need to talk. I need to talk to you.”

I’m ready to bite back a snarky comment like, yeah, well, I wanted to talk thirteen years ago, but you never gave me that option, but instead I nod. Annie and I have already talked and I know I have her blessing to seek closure.

Annie kisses me on the cheek. “I love you,” she whispers.

I don’t say anything back. Why don’t I tell her I love her, too? I just let her take the left fork in the path that leads to the lake, as Sara and I take the one on the right. I glance over my shoulder and see Ting step beside Annie. I see Annie laugh and I’m about to abandon my talk with Sara, but she touches me on the arm. My need for closure is too great, as I look into the eyes that feel like home to me.

We walk along the path in silence. I’m convinced neither of us is quite ready to break the silence. I’m in the eye of the storm and it’s peaceful there but the winds on either side of the eye threaten to destroy me.

I don’t relish interrupting the calm, but someone has to make the first move. “Shit, Sara, why did you have to come crashing back into my life just when everything is starting to work out for me. Annie is a wonderful woman—”

“You came into my world. I didn’t crash back into yours.”

“Sara, that was not a real question, it was rhetorical.”

“Oh.”

“Stop looking at me like that.”

“Like what?”

“Like you looked at me the last night we made love.”

“I never stopped loving you, Nicky—never.”

“Stop, don’t tell me that. I love Annie now. You don’t get to come strolling back into my life confusing me into falling back into your arms.”

“I know, I know. I lost that privilege a long time ago.”

“No shit.”

“Can I ask you something?”

“You just did.” I look away for a moment and then return her gaze. “Sorry, being a bitch again. Sure, go ahead, ask away.” I throw my arms in the air.

“Annie is a human, right? Yet she knows about you. I thought that was forbidden. Have you talked about how you will deal with your relationship in ten years, or twenty years when she starts to grow old and resents your youth? I’m not advocating that you leave her or anything, I’m just wondering.”

“Although it is forbidden to reveal ourselves, circumstances forced our hand. We were given special dispensation to tell Annie and Vic, but honestly it would not have mattered. I love her and I wanted her to know everything.” I switch gears on her. “Why didn’t you tell me? We could have figured something out.”

“You mean like my mother and father?” She raises her brow. “You saw that disaster unfold when my father died. How can you ask that?”

“Was it
