Tiarnan and I crept inside the catacombs. Water dripped somewhere nearby, the sound echoing through the dark space. Must filled my nose, a dusty, dank scent that could only be present in an underground tomb full of the rotting dead.

All along the walls, there were rusted metal gates that led to stores upon stores of coffins. A metal platform sat in the very center of the main gallery. What was it for? Not a clue, and I didn’t want to ask.

“Any idea what we’re looking for?” I hissed, leaning closer to Tiarnan.

He shifted to look at me, the shadowy edge of his nose only an inch from mine. “We’re looking for something…off.”

I rolled my eyes. Great. That was definitely a lot of help. Everything about this damn place was off.

We inched further down the gallery and turned right into the first corridor. A pool of blood spread across the middle of the dingy floor. My heart shuddered, and I took a step back, grasping tight onto Tiarnan’s arm.

“Is that the kind of off you mean?”

He pulled the sword from his scabbard and held it high before him. It glowed, despite the heavy darkness. “Get behind me.”

“Don’t be such a dude. I can take care of myself.”

“If you had a sword, I’d agree.” He tightened the grip on his silver hilt. “Now, get the hell behind me, Clark.”

I did as he said, but curled my hands into fists all the same. Every few feet, I cast another glance over my shoulder. Now, if I were the bad guy, I would have used this whole thing as some kind of lure. And then I would have jumped the unsuspecting snoops from behind them.

We inched past a floor to ceiling collection of old, rotting coffins. Cobwebs and dirt clung to every surface, but someone had placed a bright white cross on the ground beside them. Whoever had done it was probably trying to be nice, but…man, it just made the whole thing creepier, particularly because the blood had spread to the base of the cross.

“Shit,” Tiarnan said, stopping suddenly.

I slammed into his back since I’d been paying far more attention to the cross. In that single instant where our bodies were touching, I couldn’t help but notice how warm he was.

I shook my head and stepped back. “What?”

“Bodies. Two of them.” He let out a shuddering sigh. “I recognise them. It’s Rosalind and Abby. The missing fae.”

I spun around him, heart in my throat. There, on the ground just inside the nearest metal gate lay two female fae. Their matching brown hair had been arranged around their heads like halos, and their eyes had been covered by two golden coins. Their palms were facing the ceiling. And they were dressed in tiny white gowns.

Vomit bubbled up in my throat.

“This is disgusting,” I said, blinking back the tears and turning away from the scene. “Whoever did this is sick.”

And I hated myself, a little bit, for being relieved that neither of these two fae were Ondine.
