Chapter 17: Not Quite So Good For Goodier

Mordred hadn’t used the sleeping pods for a long time. He picked up his pass to WB1 at Thames House reception and descended by lift to First Underground. He took the shuttle to the gents’ cloakroom where he changed into a pair of pyjamas and went through into a bare metallic room with about ten large drawers. He pressed the button on the nearest. Out came his bed. He climbed on, lay down and felt it return to its original position. The lights went off. He tried to sleep, but couldn’t. Too many thoughts.

After what seemed like an age, a dim light came on, accompanied by a gentle dinging alarm and an androgynous voice. ‘Please press the green Exit button on your left within five minutes.’ It would keep reminding him at thirty-second intervals until he either put it out of its misery or was ejected automatically. He had no inclination to prolong the process.

7pm. He’d been in here three hours. Contrary to what he thought, he must at least have dozed. And if he was being recalled at this time in the day, there must have been a development.

In the cloakroom, he found a new set of clothes – socks, underwear, white shirt and a dark suit – along with a set of instructions to top up on nutrition and be in D7 for 7.45. He showered, took the lift to the canteen, ate a bowl of spinach and ricotta gnocchi and then a Wagon Wheel. Suki came to sit with him. They talked Chinese, and about her recent trip to Shanghai. It turned out she was invited to D7 too.

When they got there, Ruby Parker sat at the head of the table. Annabel, Tariq, Edna and Ian were there, plus another young man who looked to be in his mid-twenties; black haired, very thin and balding with a green turtle-necked pullover. He smiled nervously at everyone around the table. He gave Suki a little wave, which she returned. They were roughly the same age. She wore a smock and had short hair, close-cropped at the side, but much longer on top. Mordred guessed it was an expensive cut and took some serious maintenance, but he didn’t know. People always seemed to admire it. No Alec. No Phyllis. The interactive whiteboard had been turned on, which meant either a video or a Powerpoint in the offing.

“Sit down quickly, John,” Ruby Parker said. “You’re going to be leaving in a minute, so there’s precious little time to lose. Firstly, let me introduce two new members of our team. Victor Shaw, who’s come to us on a transfer from GCHQ, and Shuqi Ling, formerly a top researcher in MI7’s East Asia section.”

“Please call me Suki,” she said quietly.

“You’re both in at the deep end,” Ruby Parker told them. “This afternoon, thanks to good work by Annabel and John, the police arrested a man for the attempted murder of a junior CIA agent called Daisy Hallenbeck.
