A company based on family values wasn't really the place for their Chief Operating Officer to announce his high-profile divorce and keep his stocks from plummeting. I’ll I needed to do was find a way to spin it so that he and his soon-to-be-ex trophy wife were both happy and looked good for the reporters. For twenty years, they played out the perfect couple for the media. Perfect kids, home, and life, arm in arm at the most high-profile events in Ivy Harbor.
Somedays, I hated my job because I fixed other people's stupid mistakes to the detriment of my schedule. It was hard to make friends among your colleagues when you knew some of them covered up the worse of the worst. I tried to keep my morals as in check as possible. Public relations was hell on a person's optimism. I was selective about who I took on.
I unconsciously picked up my phone before I realized what I was doing. My compulsion to contact my baby girl grew, and the weekend hadn't helped my possessiveness. I'd found success and freedom in starting my own firm, answering to no one. Now all of that seemed like a trap. It kept me from the one thing I'd pretended for so long I didn't need. The concept of Katy formed on the night of my birthday until she was a living breathing representation of what I'd promised myself I'd start looking for.
Tossing my phone aside, I picked up the receiver and dialed my parents’ number. It didn't matter the time of day, my mother always answered. It was no different, and she didn't bother with a greeting.
"Lindy, what's wrong?"
"Nothing, Mom, I was…I need to tell you something and ask your advice."
"Anything, just give me a moment until I can make it downstairs and put on the kettle. How's work? You're calling from your office."
"Same as always. Husband couldn't keep it in his pants and wanted to exchange the old trophy wife for a younger one."
"The irresistible allure of a beautiful, unadulterated piece of art. We're very much a culture based on the superficiality of beauty standards."
"Are we going to get into the debate of the relationship between symmetrical beauty and the biological imperative to mate? Isn't it a bit late in the night to tear open those old societal wounds?"
She chuckled in that free way she had. Linda Rubin was, for all intents and purposes, the epitome of laidback intellectual. Her place of peace was in the middle of a debate—an exchange of ideas whether they were shared or differing from her companions.
My life had been odd. Always the new kid. And while people heard boarding school or private school, I didn't grow up with a sense of entitlement. Mom and Dad always said to learn from the mistake of others around you; emulation was the product of mediocrity. They believed that if you didn’t stand out, take up space, that you were wasting your potential. Individuality was encouraged throughout my childhood and teen years.
