Madison arrives at Ashlee’s apartment. Alex should already be there doing a forensic sweep of the place, and she wants to take a closer look for herself. As she pulls into a spare parking space, she thinks about Vince’s discharge from the navy. Without knowing what happened to cause it, she can’t make any assumptions about him, and if the investigation has been covered up by the navy, she knows there’s no point going to them for information. They won’t talk to her if it means trouble for them. His discharge doesn’t prove Vince is a danger to women, but she wants to speak to the victim’s family as soon as Nate’s contact comes through with a phone number.

She sighs as she gets out of her car, acutely aware of the clock ticking. Having checked in with Stella first thing, she knows that no credible tips or sightings of Ashlee came in overnight, which is frustrating, but if anything, it’s making her more determined to follow every possible lead. Stella did mention that a lot of locals had called to volunteer in the search efforts, which is positive. It means Ashlee was well liked by the diners she served. There has been no suggestion so far that she was in trouble with anyone. She was just living her life when she vanished. Like so many other victims before her.

Madison nods to the uniformed officer stationed outside Ashlee’s front door, but she doesn’t go in straight away; instead she heads to the last apartment in the row, the one next to Justin’s place. She bangs on the door, but there’s no answer, and it still smells damp from the burst pipe. Her gut tells her she should get the landlady down here to check if anyone’s hiding out in there.

When she walks into Ashlee’s apartment, she finds Alex on all fours in full protective equipment, scraping samples of residue from Ashlee’s bathroom floor. It’s not a job she envies.

“Found any blood?” she asks.

He bumps his head on the sink as he looks up. “Bugger.”

She smiles. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you.”

“Morning, Detective.” He pulls his mask down and rubs the back of his head. “No, I haven’t found anything to suggest anyone was hurt in this apartment or that there’s been a clean-up to hide it. This is the last room to investigate, but it’s looking like nothing happened in here either.”

“Good. Hopefully that means Ashlee’s still alive.” She checked the local papers and online news sites earlier to make sure everyone has included the girl’s disappearance as headline news. “Have you seen the papers this morning?”

He nods. “Her disappearance has knocked Cody Stevens off the front pages at last. I expect the press are secretly glad to have something new to report on.”

“I’m relieved she made the front covers; I need as many people as possible looking for her.”

Alex stands up to stretch his legs. “By the way, I went through Ashlee’s friends and posts on Instagram as you asked.
