Chapter 33

The Professor was right. Rick Houser was a good boy, and he gave up what the Professor said he would. He was more than ready to give them all the information he had on Willy Reichard and Helmuth Muller: he told them how Willy had started out selling grass to a couple of his friends, and soon was selling it in pretty serious quantities and starting to branch out into acid — and lately, even a little heroin. He was buying it from the Outfit guys, the Chicago mob operators who ran the bars around Old Town, the hippie section of Chicago. And he was selling it to whoever wanted it, through the usual network of friends, friends of friends, and friends of friends of friends.

Listening to Rick Houser, Hank felt that the doctor-to-be was telling it all like he was confessing to a priest, trying to get a te absolvo for his own wild times and whatever guilt might have scattered onto him from the sins of his friends.

Some friends they were….

The last thing Rick Houser gave Hank and Marvin was the address of Helmuth Muller, Willy’s high school buddy and fellow junkie. He made them swear not to tell Muller where they’d gotten his address.
