Australian Public Affairs Information Service (APAIS) is an interdisciplinary database offering access to published material on Australian political, economic, legal, social, and cultural affairs. Materials included are periodicals, newspapers, scholarly journals, conference papers, and books. Australian Public Affairs Full Text (APAFT) is the full-text counterpart to APAIS. Because APAIS indexes approximately 550 journals, and APAFT provides full text of more than 400 journals, these databases are highly recommended for locating book reviews on topics pertaining to Australia. Both are available via subscription and will be accessible through most Australian and New Zealand libraries. These resources are less likely to be available in the United States and Canada. Journals indexed that regularly feature reviews of literary works include Antipodes, Australian Aboriginal Studies, Australian Academic and Research Libraries, Australasian Drama Studies, Australian Literary Studies, Hecate, Meanjin, New Literatures Review, Overland, Quadrant, and Westerly. More information on APAIS and APAFT may be found in chapter 4.

For many years Book Review Index (BRI) was the most comprehensive index available for book reviews published in a wide variety of periodical resources. Approximately five hundred periodicals and newspapers are currently indexed by BRI. Be aware that retrospective coverage varies by each title. Periodicals indexed range from the Harvard Business Review to the Center for Children’s Books: Bulletin. General-interest magazines such as Ms., Time, the New Yorker, and Atlantic are also included. A full list of periodicals indexed can be found in each print issue or online through Gale (www.gale.cengage.com/BRIOnline/). Some of the journals indexed in BRI that regularly review Australian books are Arena Magazine (1992–), Australian Library Journal (1997–), Journal of Australian Studies (1997–), Magpies (1991–), Meanjin (1988–), and Quadrant (1994–). The most important review source in Australia, the Australian Book Review, is indexed from 1991 to 2003 only. To locate a review in BRI, you will need to know the year the item was published, then check under the author’s name in the appropriate annual or quarterly volume. Keep in mind that most book reviews are published within twelve to eighteen months of the publication date. Over the past several years, databases like Gale’s Expanded Academic ASAP, ProQuest Research Library, and EBSCO’s Academic Search Complete have strengthened their coverage of book reviews, making it less vital to consult BRI. However, it is still possible to identify reviews in BRI that are not available in any of the aforementioned resources.

Combined Retrospective Index to Book Reviews in Humanities Journals, 1802–1974 is a set of ten volumes that provides author and title access to approximately five hundred thousand reviews appearing in more than 150 humanities journals.
