Chapter Nineteen

GILLEN AND EDUARDO didn’t speak for half an hour after their run-in with the highway patrol. That was just fine with Gillen since he had two big problems to solve before he could clean up the mess that was his life.

Problem number one: the police didn’t have a warrant out for his arrest. Given the disaster of a crime scene he’d left, this didn’t make any sense. Even if Therese hadn’t called the police on him—an impossibility in and of itself—someone would have noticed by now that Eduardo was dead. The only way they didn’t was if Therese had not only not called the police, but also gone out of her way to cover Gillen’s tracks. Not only did that require a kind of altruism Therese didn’t possess, but it also required her to do more manual labor than she’d ever done in her life. Just the thought of her cleaning up a bloodstain stretched the limits of plausibility; the thought of her actually moving a corpse defied reality itself. Unfortunately, Therese pulling off a cover-up was the only logical explanation for why no one was looking for him, so he could either choose to believe she’d helped him or accept the fact that he had no idea what was going on.

Problem number two, the larger problem on the list: back when Gillen lost control over the car, Eduardo had taken control of Gillen’s limbs. Gillen hadn’t been free to consider the ramifications at the time, what with the police and all, but he had plenty to think about now that he was alone. He wasn’t alone, though—that was the problem. His body was no longer his own. If Eduardo had been able to take control once, there was nothing stopping him from doing it again. Considering Gillen had been planning to kill himself once he reached his destination, losing control over his body would ruin everything.

Gillen drummed his fingertips against the steering wheel as the last slivers of sunlight disappeared below the horizon. He’d spent countless hours deciding on how he wanted to end his life after Eduardo’s death. He had no intention of throwing that away to become a prisoner in his own head. Unfortunately, his end goal of suicide didn’t leave much room for him to negotiate.

“What do you want from me?” he said, glancing at Eduardo out of the corner of his eye.

“I don’t want you to kill me.” Eduardo stared out over the road ahead. “But I also want to know why you killed my therapist.”

“Why do you need me to tell you that? Can’t you just look through my memories?”

“I could.” Eduardo shot him a quick look that he couldn’t interpret. “But it won’t answer my question.”

“Why not?”

“Because I don’t care about what happened. I know what happened. I saw it in the papers. What I want to know is why you did it.”

“And you don’t see that in my memories?”

“It’s easier if you just tell me.”

Gillen sighed and shifted his attention back to the road.
