Abigail was only a fourth of the way through her baking when she ran out of cinnamon.

“The man is making a muddle of my head.” She punched down the lump of dough she had set aside for loaves. A part of her wished it was Will Tremain she was hitting. “Why can’t he just go away, or at least be like the others?” she asked aloud.

The kitchen was empty and quiet except for Abigail’s voice and the sound of her fist sinking into the soft mound of dough. She cleaned her hands on the front of her apron and sat down with an exasperated sigh. Matthew had badgered Lars until the old man had taken his cane pole, Matthew and the dog fishing over an hour ago.

“If I’m going to get the rolls finished I’d better get myself to town.” The last thing Abbie felt like doing was walking down the hill to the mercantile.

She tugged off her apron and took down the small tin from the back of the cupboard. She left the large roll of bills untouched while she extracted a few coins, then covered the rising dough and stepped out of her house.

Sunshine momentarily blinded her and she stood on the steps of her house blinking in awe. The day was fine and sunny, all traces of the gray rain clouds had disappeared. If only her dark mood could vanish so easily. She began to walk toward town, and within a few minutes she was swinging her reticule and humming to herself. For the first time, Abigail noticed the colorful flowers dotting the roadside and the foundation of a new house going up near her own home. She had been so preoccupied with Willem Tremain that she was in danger of letting summer march past her without her even noticing. Fall was only weeks away, and then the first snows of winter would come. Weeks had evaporated since Willem arrived.

Abigail would soon be alone with Matthew…or would she? She willed herself to stop thinking of Willem, but she could not. He had shaken the foundations of her beliefs over and over, and his suggestion that he might not leave with the end of summer had left her both confused and fearful.

Returning with her supplies, Abigail opened the front door of the boardinghouse and found herself face-to-face with a man who could only be described as pugnacious in appearance.

He was big—all over. His neck strained at the celluloid collar of his stiff white shirt and his shoulders pulled at the seams of his fashionable suit coat. A sporty bowler was perched atop his short-cropped blond head. He was a brawny bulldog of a man, and he was blocking Abigail’s entrance into her own home.

“Who are you?” she blurted out. Her hand was still fastened on the doorknob. She saw the man frown and take a step toward her. Abigail was forced to either step back or find herself literally nose-to-nose with the brute.

She stepped back.

The man reached inside his vest pocket and drew out a pair of wire-rimmed spectacles.
