IT WAS late. Lincoln knew that. He left the dishes undone because he wanted to get upstairs to see Noel. Since he’d gotten home from the hospital, Lincoln had an itch he couldn’t explain. Spending time with Noel had become the highlight of his day.
Of course, it seemed something always happened to keep him from getting what he wanted. He’d been counting the hours until he could spend some quality time with Noel, and when the clock hit eleven, he was ready to go. That plan went out the window, because a few kids had sat in one of the booths, quizzing one another for an upcoming test. Ty told them the diner was closing, but when one of the girls had given Lincoln puppy-dog eyes, he gave in and told them they could sit for another hour. He’d let Ty go home, assuring him that everything would be fine. When the students were finished, they got up and thanked Lincoln profusely and left Ty a nice tip, which Lincoln put in the register for him.
Lincoln hurried upstairs, not surprised to find Katy asleep on the couch, her head thrown back and mouth open. He was going to let her stay, but she jolted awake when he was covering her. She chatted for a few minutes, then left, promising to be back early in the morning. Noel had come out of the bedroom a few moments later.
“Is she gone?”
“Who? Katy? Yeah, she just left.”
“You’re not just teasing me, right?” He peeked around the corner and looked. When he saw she was really gone, he came in and flopped down.
Lincoln chuckled. “How’s it going, pup?”
“You’re seriously going to ask me that? It’s been two damned weeks.” His eyes went wide and he huffed out a breath. “She’s driving me nuts!”
“What did she do this time?”
His voice rose an octave as he tried to mimic Katy’s inflections. “Oh, you look tired, Noel. You should get some rest, Noel. Have you eaten, Noel?” He dropped his head back onto the couch. “She even asked me if I had to pee!”
“And did you?”
He scowled. “You are so missing the point.” Lincoln threaded deft fingers through his hair. “I know she means well, but can’t you please tell her she doesn’t have to come back?”
Lincoln smiled at him. “No.”
“Come on!” The pleading whine amused Lincoln. He knew Noel was doing his best to sway him. The pouty lip, the wide eyes that blinked several times, the expression of desperation. Lincoln stepped over to the couch and took a seat beside Noel. He leaned in and captured Noel’s lip between his teeth, tugging it gently.
“It’s only one more day. The doctor said you’re healing up nicely, and she’s going to take you to your appointment tomorrow. If all goes well, you’ll be downstairs by Monday.”
“But she’s going to be here until then, right?”
“Yes, she’s going to be here until Sunday.”
Noel sighed and sat back again. “Can you at least tell me why?”
That was a good question, and one that deserved an answer.
